Why are GPUs so expensive?

Nvidia/AMD will need to produce something special for 2020 at reasonable prices, that's for sure.

It wouldn't surprise me if Nvidia released a fire breathing whore of a GPU just to undermine next gen console releases.

Looking forward to Intel getting in on the GP{U market too, the more players the better. Sure, they might be behind the competition but that situation will change with time.

Until then, i'm just going to play through my backlog.

Even if you wanted to get away from PC gaming, it's almost impossible with all the benefits it has. The platform has you by the balls and the big 3 know this.

Did prices ever go down again after the mining boom? I cant remember they did, not that i expected them too
The second hand market did, and to an extent the retail market lost its most ridiculous prices. This was a good while ago though.

It was the retailers who gouged the pricing during the mining boom, not nvidia. Why are we even talking about that?

4K8K alt account confirmed. That is one of his favorite things to do, jump into a debate disagreeing with everyone and use decade old information as evidence.

The kid is unbelievable. Ask him about the invisible battery tech Sony apparently have ready for retail. I would but I'm blocked I believe. :D

You are not on his list yet mate. You need to up your game if you want to join us :p

Invisible battery tech eh? WTF? :D

As I said in another thread yesterday. I am starting to get worried for him. It is like he is rapidly losing brain cells. Poor thing. We should not be so harsh on him as clearly somethings up. Hope he gets better soon.

You want the most anti-consumer, anti-competitive, bribing company outfit (mafia) into the GPU market, which already has another anti-consumer, money grabbing outfit and believe you going to have competition?

Their join task would be to take out Radeon and then milk you harder than they are doing now on their markets. Don't be a fool.

By your logic the same applys to everything, why are cars so expensive some cost £2 or £3 million? Houses, wine, jewelry everything is expensive if you look at the top end

Did you forget to take your meds today?

Here, i've got your Christmas hat for you:

Owning a top end GPU isn't compulsory. There is plenty choice for those on a tighter budget or not wishing to pay the top tier price. I do find it incredible that people are so offended by pricing of a luxury item.

Why is it incredible though? For about 2 decades everyone has got used to being able to buy the top end GPU for x amount. It is only with Turing now that has changed where we have to pay A LOT more for this. The kind of money that would get you top tier now buys you mid tier. Surely you can see why some might be not happy about this sudden change?

I get why it is happening, but does not mean I have to be happy about it. Believe me, if it ends up getting to a point where your £1200 is buying you only the 5th best performing card of that generation, you won’t be feeling good about it either.

Performance per dollar generally improves with new generations of graphics cards (and most other consumer products for that matter)

The issue I have with RTX is that it stagnated on that metric. The price in a vacuum doesn't really matter to me.

Nvidia can do whatever they want with their products and pricing, but if they want my money, they will have to do better on the 3000 series.

Indeed. This is a big issue. I am hoping the 3070 fixes this.

Don't pay it then! Simples!!!

There seems to be two different groups in this discussion:

One group views GPU's as a symbol of status and thus appear to like higher prices in that higher prices seperate them from the peasants.

The other group views GPU's as a means to an end rather than an end unto itself.

I waste money on some fun hobbies, but I tend to get a little embarrassed when people ask how much money I spent on some of it. I understand that to people who don't share my enthusiasm for my chosen money pits, I might as well be explaining how much money I spent on a "pet rock."

I get the impression some people here would spend whatever amount of money they could on a pet rock as long as it was considered to be a "top tier" rock.

Indeed. And that is what I did, I skipped a gen :D

But that is not the point. Point is when prices all of a sudden change in a big way, surely it is obvious to understand why some might not be happy about it when we are used to a certain way all these years?

As an example if on consoles people had not made a big deal when the Xbox One was announced as digital only and had stayed quiet and accepted it, everyone would have been stuck with digital only on consoles, so speaking out and showing displeasure does have it’s uses in my opinion. It happened to Nvidia also not so long ago with one of their silly policies they tried to get every company to sign up to.

For me personally it does not mean I begrudge those who decided to pay the extra, happy for them to enjoy. Look at Kaapstad, he spends silly amounts on GPU’s, by far the most here. Not many take issue with him, but does not mean we cannot take issue with prices sky rocketing suddenly like Turing did. Hell even Kaapstad himself has been saying prices are getting stupid now, and guess what? He is right!! ;)

Can you imagine if the next gen Xbox had the same performance as the Xbox One X for the same launch price while a new Xbox Ultra had better performance for twice the price? The outcry would be unprecented yet pc gamers are taken for chumps and some of them even have the gut to defend the companies that are ripping them off.

So several court cases later after the Intel anti-competitive and shady tactics, over 20 years, this your response?
So gullible?

So you want the duopoly to never end as that's what we have just now due to no competition. It's never been good for the customer, history has shown that.

Your logic is severely flawed. Away and lie down.

Numpty!

You do not have argument hence you call me "numpty"? Eat a report to learn making coherent argument and not resulting to primary school yard.

Because I do not want to drop the discussion to your level by answering as you deserve.

Very poor comparisons.

For £100k ish you can get a ridiculously fast car...too fast even for normal use.

You can buy a house that does the job for a lot less than £2/3m.

A cheap bottle of wine will still do the job at the same ABV.

Jewellery is really pointless to compare. It doesn’t really do anything and tends to be priced around the rarity of the materials.

Anything less than a 2080ti won’t really cut the mustard for the latest titles at high res/high refresh.
