What do you think of this for a 3950x build?

Hey guys, this is the parts I am currently looking at, wondering if there's anything there I should be subbing for anythings else. Biggest issue I see is the the RAM which is not in stock wondering if the 3200c16 would be that much worse than the 3600c18. Also that motherboard the £200 "entry level" I undersatand Gigabyte is the way to go but there is a normally more espensive MSI on offer for about the same price.

Hi

You can save a bit of cash by doing something like this. Do you actually need a Gen 4 SSD ? A Gen 3 is still blazingly quick and saves a good chunk of cash. Swapped out the cooler for a high end air option, and changed the Ram to a cheaper 3000MHz kit. You can overclock the Ram if you want with Ryzen Dram calculator.

My basket at Overclockers UK:

Total: £1,254.45 (includes shipping: £10.50)

you saved cash by
removing a gen 4 ssd and using a gen 3? what about if he was gen 4
removing 3600mhz ram and using 3000mhz? gain what about if he wants faster ram

A Gen 4 is overkill for 99% of uses. Also the faster ram is not worth the extra money when you can overclock.

90% of the PC's the users on here have are overkill, does not stop them wanting them.
you didnt even ask why or if he needed it you just removed it from the spec

Thanks for the replys. The reason for going for the 3950x is for encoding so was thinking the high write speed of Gen 4 would be worth it, plus probably won't upgrade for a while (currently on 6700k).

Re the cooler, I actually thought about that Dark Rock Pro in particular. Then just thought AIO would be tidier and less trouble with fitting ram etc. What would be the coolest and quietest of those options.

a good air cooler is a good iif not better than a AIO option

Overkill generally means money wasted. You could buy a 3900X or 3600X for gaming for example and both would give you more or less the same performance. One costs a lot more than the other though.

As for the SSD a Gen 3 NVMe is already fast enough. Plus the fact Gen 4 ones seem to run even hotter from what I have seen. If you are doing encoding for a living then sure Gen 4 is probably worth the extra. Also I am pretty sure I did ask if he needed it. Guess you missed that bit ;)

To be fair, there's probably quite a bit of overkill in my build. Though the extra cost does pale a bit when you are spending £750 on a CPU.

I am going to get the Dark Rock Pro as I said earlier it was nearly my choice anyway and you guys have reinforced that. I stuck my head in my case so I know the cooler should just about fit plus looking around the RAM clearance shouldn't be a problem.

Looks great, although I'd dump the Gen4 SSD until some better ones are around later next year. You can bag 1TB Gen3 based drive for about £100, or alternatively double up the size if spending the same and get 2TB of space. :)
