Why are GPUs so expensive?

4k gaming doesn't have to be expensive. I'm thinking about getting a 4k TV for gaming. I'm playing older games like Battlefield IV anyway so they'll look good at 4k. I'll be playing todays games like RDR2 on my next Pc in a few years time. They'll fly on future hardware and the games will be very cheap to buy.
I’ve been doing this for years. Well minus the 4K part.

Exactly. Too many people just make assumptions like this. Like as if everyone has the same wants and needs.

Most people seem to think everyone needs at least 144fps or something. Nope, games I play are plenty good enough at 60fps for me. Therefore I actually can get away with a cheaper graphics card than someone who games at 1440p and needs 144fps.
I don't need 144fps either, but 90-100 or a bit above fps is noticeably smoother for me than 60, each to his own :)

60fps is good but when you have dips to the 40's it's definitely more noticeable.

Sure. But I assume you play online and these things have more of an impact? Playing a game slowly at your own pace offline like I do it is not much of an issue. Many games I even play with a controller :)

But yep I agree each to his own. Someone may pop in on a bit and say they need minimum 240hz/fps as they are playing csgo or something where it makes a big difference.

I think the issue I'm personally having is I have two methods of gaming I like:

1. 4K TV
2. ultrawide monitor (21:9 or 32:9) high refresh rate

Sadly I've veered towards number 1.

There are super cheap 4K TVs - Hitachi HK5100 43" for less than 200 pounds, Hitachi HK5100 55" for ~ 350 pounds.

And there are still no PCs capable to deliver an appropriate gaming signal to these!

Something's very wrong with AMD's and nvidia's targets, goals and execution!

I agree. I can only hope that the game consoles release this year forces them to drop their prices or increase their performance or improve their scaling algorithms.

DLSS, AMD sharpening and the Nvidia sharpening filter all seem to point in a slightly more encouraging direction but prices really need to come down and GPU's improve generation to generation more.

Nvidia/AMD will have a serious problem selling mid-range cards at high-end prices next year.

Also, Nvidia should be developing their own games/creating their own studios to push PC hardware to it's limits. PC gaming has had a problem with parity for years now, it's a reason i would never buy a £1K card as it's just souped-up console ports PC get now.

He's lying but simply because he doesn't know what he's talking about.

nvidia is salty that they got kicked to the kerb and aren't in the high end console market anymore.

He's trying to say the next gen machines are only equal to rtx2060 but that's lower than everyone including Microsoft expects and makes no sense

yeah that's an on going issue for a long time now. Each year I bring up the fact that PC has no triple AAA exclusive studios during the E3 PC show and I get downvoted to hell on Reddit lol... but it's true, someone needs to step up.

obviously PC will always be faster than the console but at least for the next year or two after launch the ps5 will be extremely appealing to low and mid range gamers. I've actually got a couple friends who have never owned a console and have outdated PCs now. Do to the upgrading cost they are both heavily considering just dropping the PC for a PS5

Some people just can't handle the truth, hence why you got downvoted. Games that'll be developed over the next 5/6 years for next gen consoles is what the PC platform should've had years before it.

It doesn't matter how powerful the hardware is if the games are designed with low end hardware in mind right from the start of development.

I'm thinking about getting Series X or PS5 just for graphically demanding titles and keeping the PC just for indies, Strategy games, etc, but i'm waiting for the dust to settle, the hype to die down, then make a decision on what to do.

For the price of a 2080 Ti you could probably buy the Series X, PS5 and a Nintendo system, all of which would have someone sorted for 5+ years, easy.

I know right! A few months ago when I was saying Stadia will turn out like it did, there was this one guy who could not handle it. He kept saying that PS5 was already outdated etc etc and that Stadia was where it was at!

Trying to remember what his name was, people were calling him rock & troll I think? :p;)

Rock 'n Troll? Congratulations for using your whole IQ on that one. You sound like a child. No offence. :p

Premature talk there. Wait until the end of the generation, then we'll see where things stand.

As i said, waiting for the hype to die down and dust to settle, then will make a decision as to where my cash is going. Might be another GPU, might be the Series X, might be more games bought on Stadia. :D

The future is wide open.

Don’t act like it is the first time you have heard of it. Loads of people have called you that. I am not the one that came up with it, wish I was though ;)

Premature talk? That was you all along, when I was telling you that you kept saying PS5 is old tech waste of time blah blah blah. Now you finally see the light and admit you was wrong and looking at a getting console. Too funny.

You went from criticising the upcoming consoles to wanting one. You also disappeared from the stadia thread once you realised what it was. Hahahaha :D
