Woman burns to death because someone forgot how electricity works:

A hospital patient has died after being set on fire during surgery in Romania.

Surgeons at Floreasca Hospital in Bucharest used an alcohol-based disinfectant on the woman, 66, before carrying out her operation for pancreatic cancer on 22 December.

But they then used an electric scalpel - which, as it came into contact with the alcohol, set the woman's body alight on the operating table.

She suffered burns to 40% of her body, and died in hospital a week later.

Police have opened an investigation into the woman's death, local media report.

...Romania spends the least on its healthcare system of any EU country, both per resident and as a percentage of its GDP. It has the highest child mortality rates on the continent, along with an underdeveloped hospital infrastructure and a persistent shortage of medical staff.

(Source).

Fun fact: Romania has not built a single new hospital since the fall of the iron Curtain in 1989. All her hospitals are Soviet era.

This must be why they come over here to leech of our NHS.

I don't know and can't be arsed to dig around at the moment. What I do know though is that a Romanian family down the road from me always seem to be visited by pregnant relatives who mysteriously go back home a few weeks after giving birth. According to the woman who lives next door to them they're up to 19 babies now in about three years.

That was a couple of years ago, so God knows how many they're up to now. Does anyone know how much it costs to have a baby on the NHS?

The NHS poaches enough foreign Dr's and nurses to keep itself afloat so I honestly couldn't care less if babies were born safely at tax payers expense

Saying that foreigners "leech" from the NHS is typical emotive BS

"Health tourism" is such a tiny tiny percentage of people that use the NHS. You are far more likely to be treated by a foreign nurse or doctor within the NHS than have a foreign patient come over specifcally for healthcare.

Meanwhile in the UK: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-50947261

There are not enough NHS staff to meet the needs of growing numbers of people with cancer, a health charity is warning.

Macmillan Cancer Support says patients are calling its helpline "at breaking point", feeling they cannot ask questions of the overstretched doctors and nurses caring for them.

Key targets for cancer care are being missed as pressure on the NHS rises.

More people are also being referred for cancer treatment.

The cancer charity's helpline received more than 240,000 calls this year, with most people needing emotional support, as a result of anxiety or fear over the disease.

This was followed by issues with accessing hospital or community care, including difficulties contacting medical staff or getting hold of specialist medical equipment for use at home.

As said, we have plenty of foreign doctors here, who could probably be used in their own countries. Who cares where a baby is born if it is born safely.

You guys make it sound like foreign medical staff are being forced to work in the UK against their will or something...

No but it creates shortages in countries that still need care as much as anyone. The UK pay more money so if they are hoping to provide their families with a good life (like we all do) then of course they follow the money.

Their "will" would be to probably work in their home country if it had a decent infrastructure and pay.

I've used the NHS enough to know that foreign professionals were vital and whining about the NHS being used by foreign people to have a baby safely is just sad.

The fact that foreign doctors and nurses work in the NHS doesn't mean that foreigners should be entitled to NHS care - that's not how it works.

You've misinterpreted his post.

But Health tourism was roughly 0.3% of the overall NHS budget and some of that was recoverable due to various agreements such as the EEA, health surcharge etc

Populist guff used to mug the credulous and leverage their stupidity at the ballot box.

Our education system has failed everywhere this stuff is swallowed.

Did you read the article? If you go digging through it then the actual cost to the NHS of foreign visitors is 1.8 billion, maternity costs alone are 200 million. I couldnt find where it says all the costs are recovered, so I'll just assume they arent. This is 2011 also, the figure is probably higher now.

I read many articles, rather than be selective. Such as:

So is £500 million being spent every year treating health tourists?
No. It’s estimated that £100 to £300 million a year is spent on patients who come to the UK to use the NHS deliberately.

Another £1.8 billion a year is estimated to be spent on people who happen to end up needing medical treatment when they are here.

Would you rather the NHS not treat holidaymakers?
