Road Cycling

Hopefully it stays dry for 10am to get a ride in with the bunch :D

Don't know why I was hopeful.

Windy enough that two guys turned back today, I just stuck myself to greig browns wheel and observed his hub for ages and ages. Couldn't get rid of me so meh.

I did some light squats yesterday, my posture is better since doing gym on occasion and I can also now bench 50kg up from struggling with the bar when I started. Not that you pedal with arms. 200kg is the max I've done on the incline leg press which I think is quite low for my size/weight.

All finished off today.

Real. Easy 100 miles to Brighton and back yesterday dragging my mate along who's not really cycled much recently. Said to him about 35 miles in can we pick the pace up a bit and he said he was going along at 160+ bpm. So carried on, with about 20 miles to go I said I'm only at 105bpm average for the day. He thought I was kidding until he looked at strava later...

Then 58 miles today to the missus' parents to finish off with a couple of days spare. Have managed to do all my normal intervals through the week even with a bit of a cold hanging on, so legs are pretty toasted! But only 2 weeks until national champs so bit of recovery and some really good legs for 2 weeks time with some luck. Seemed to work last year.

Good work @SoliD

This is my first year trying to actually do some training as part of the Festive 500 too, rather than just bimbling around. Legs are feeling it but the distance has ticked over quite quickly. 3.6km to go which I’ll hopefully knock off tomorrow. :p

I’ve been out today and the wind was brutal in the peaks. Didn’t manage more than about 20 miles. Slowly getting back into regular riding.

Got out for the group ride today, so dark in the morning still!

Was going good, got a bit carried away hammering it after 90k on the front and then had to sit on for a bit, bit of a hill after 100k on my ride home made sure my legs are feeling it now!

I am nowhere near the festive 500. Maybe 160 road and 30 turbo. I had three days off 26-28th.

Same, usually its just a case of getting the miles in but managed all the intervals I wanted with a nice 810tss for the week and banked some good steady z2 blocks on 24th,25th and 26th.

Definitely didn't want to do much more today towards the end of the ride, don't think having a cough come on yesterday and today has helped that though.

Actually only about 65miles short of the 9000 for the year but will be back at work again nye so won't have time to knock that off. Not bad considering I spent a month in Vietnam and Cambodia in April.

Going to be enjoying a proper day off tomorrow at the darts! Then back to reality on Tuesday!

Am I being a complete tool, or are these pedals wrong?

Here's my current SPD's fitted on the right hand side of the bike, pictured with the new SPD-SL's that I was trying to fit, but after trying and failing to fit them, I noticed they're marked up as L despite them needing to be on the right hand side of the bike. Am I being special, or has someone at Shimano royally ballsed up? I think I might've stripped the thread on my left crank arm before noticing something was wrong

I finally got to give my Dolan RDX a first shakedown ride this afternoon... After actually buying the frame in September 2018!

Not a bad job done if I say so myself - shifting and brakes were pretty much spot on. Ride quality was better than I expected as well.

What I did notice once home is that there was front/back play in the headset. Normally I this is easy - slacken off the stem bolts, nip up the top cap bolt till the movement goes (front brake on, rock bike and hold the upper cap to feel for anything). However, the RDX has a bung-expander-thingy for the carbon fork. The instructions say you need 2-3mm of stem above the steerer tube - I've got a 10mm spacer on top of the stem as I intentionally cut it longer to allow for some fine tuning of fit:

This is the supplied expander which is attached to the top cap (the bolt runs from the top cap through to the bottom to hold it all together):

What I've found is that either the expander grips but you can't torque it up enough to remove the play or, the expander doesn't grip and just spins round inside the head tube. Either outcome is obviously wrong but what have I missed?

{Edit to add}

I did think it was nice & tight (with no play) when built - this is post ride

That looks like the BBB one and same as what I used on my Kinesis.

Remove the top cap and bolt totally:

Then install the silver expanding bung into the steerer and expand it using a 6mm Allen key.

Then install top cap and bolt as normal. If you just do the bolt up it will expand the bung and pull it upwards at the same time until it hits the underside of the top cap, where it will allow you to torque it correctly but then develops play.

What he said. For some reason they all come win with the top cap bolt tightened too tightly into the expander bolt.

Built up into a good looking winter bike though!

I got slightly splattered on the group ride, even with full guards, if you don’t have a flap or they are a little wobbly you end up with spray. The guys with Raceblade Pro, they work well but seem a bit short even with the flap. OK for solo but flick up some water behind still.

V pleased I went for full guards w/fixings, some of the plastic ones looked a little rattley, but can be easily removed for summer riding I guess.

Thanks @Berger & @Jonny ///M - been away so not had chance to sort properly but yes, the top cap was bottomed out on the expander. Will have time to re-assemble it all at the weekend.

Hi all, Happy New Year! I'm back at work now so normal spam service is resumed! ;) :D

Plans for Christmas riding just took a bit of a hit - checked the winter bike over after taking it off the turbo, and hydraulic oil's leaking from where the hose joins the shifter. Tightened it slightly with no luck so I assume a seal's gone.
Gutted! I can only sympathise as I had the same thing one morning around a month ago. My front had been feeling a bit spongy for a few days, I found the fluid low so topped it up, it still felt 'poor' so then checked the pads and found fluid leaking out the caliper! One of my pistons was cracked.:(

Been very quiet in here! OBviously too much indulging in christmas dinner...

How's everyones Christmas' been? Get anything good or not worth the risk of your missus finding out how much stuff actually costs for cycling.
Socks! And, socks! Although have a bunch of gift money still as told most the family I wanted to buy myself some new commuting shoes and a helmet. Have still not spotted either... Spring sales where are you! :D

And far too much indulging here. Too much cheese, biscuits, alcohol and cake! :o

A couple of Zwift sessions I found really hard, almost like dropping my weekly commute for ~10 days with a reduction in miles (in the couple of weeks upto the break) before any real Zwifting had a huge impact on my FTP. I could previously sit at 2.5w/kg for 3+ hours (group rides), yet found myself popping at 2.5 in 30-40 minutes. It was a real shock, although after a few sessions, a trainer recalibration and fully recovering from some illness I seemed to recover some of it. Need to get some base volume back in!

I got 5 pair of Pongo socks though and a couple of Sticky bottles :D
Plus my RC901 shoes. So I done rather well!!
Hope you've continued to feel better buddy! What the hell is an official Sticky bottle?! :o

Beers most nights for me and I did 29 miles/2000ft on just eat on Thursday night.
Busy night! How many hours for that? On the MTB still?

Well, that’s the plan anyway!
Gotta have some plans and aims buddy! I'm going to go through mine shortly... Truth is I had very little coming from 2018 into 2019, but it was nice to tick some of them off and tick over 4000 miles.

But only 2 weeks until national champs so bit of recovery and some really good legs for 2 weeks time with some luck. Seemed to work last year.
Big aim so 'early' but I guess that's good with the CX based season?

Funny you should say that, had a good discussion about guards and their length on our group ride before Xmas. It was a damp one on filty wet roads. 4 of us out, all with various guards. I'd always thought mine where good, they are for me, but seems like they kick up quite a 'tail' behind as they don't wrap the rear tyre much past the horizontal. The best set of guards out for that had a flap past the horizontal, only 1-2" more than another almost identical set, but it made a huge difference. I've got some plans to extend mine, as the front has needed some tweaks for a while (I get a front 'tail' which covers my camera & ELEMNT through any substantial standing water). I've got it into my head as we've had a wet, but not cold December, that the rest of the winter is all going to be the same...

I've ordered a pair of Spatz. Took the plunge and ordered the Roadman V2. Could've saved ~£40 by going for the earlier ones (basically Legalz v1 - give me a holla if you want a link to them for £55) but got a good Xmas bonus and wanted them for wet & cold riding, not just wet. They need insulation as I've turned into a wuss.

Awesome price! Really happy with my 4iiii!

Happy Christmas to me, Happy Christmas to me...

Actually ordered before Christmas and have managed a couple of turbo sessions on them. Super service from Cyclepowermeters.com - they replied to my first e-mail at 20:46! I ordered the next day with hassle-free delivery via DPD. They answered my questions on the Assiomo vs Powertap, including reliability:

Cyclepowermeters said:
The Assioma has been the most reliable product we have sold bar none. So I don’t have any hesitation in recommending it.

Very easy to install (8mm hex key included in the box) and setup via the mobile app. Paired up to my Edge 800 via ANT+ and Sufferfest via Bluetooth LE. Going from Sufferfest virtual power to "proper" power, my gut instinct is that efforts over my threshold are actually a bit easier on proper power (so I suspect VP was under-reading). Will subject myself to a proper Sufferfest FTP/4DP test soon to set an new year benchmark. Stat's from the first turbo session:

I was expecting my L/R balance to be worse than that as I've previously broken my femur, so my legs are slightly different lengths now. Interested to see how how (if!) power improves with more time on the bike, though I suspect the first of the Shropshire Reliability Rides (2nd February) will see me getting dropped very quickly again!
