Hey guys, i really need a gfx card update, still rocking my GTX780 and its just not cutting it on 1440p. The main game that TANKS it is Monster Hunter World, i have to run that on my second monitor which is 1080p and even then to get 60fps its everything on minimum.

So im looking and i dont have a huge budget, would a 1660 super be a nice upgrade? I dont demand games to be on ultra, especially MH:W but would like 60fps with some of the settings up in the medium/highs to get some nice visuals.

Or is there another alternative i should look at? Im looking at about £250 budget really.

Your sig says you have a RTX 2060? Is that an error?

what 1440 are you looking at playing with 3440x1440 or 2560x1440, my GTX 1060 runs 3440x1440 @144hz quite well, and thats a mobile card, but that older games like call of duty 4 etc, on ultra settings, but the newest call of duty, everything is on low! if your playing 2560x1440 a 1660 might work, but someone more experienced will chime in, ive just bought an EVGA 2070 super watercooled for my 3440x1440 gaming, but thats twice your budget

Sell your GTX 780 and put the extra funds towards an AMD 5700, you can get them for £300 give or take if you shop around. You can also pick up a 2060 (non super) for around £250-260 at the moment if you prefer team green, although I'd personally lean toward the 5700.

Even if you don't want to use an auction site or similar, CEX would buy your 780 for £35-55 depending on which version you have.

The above review shows results for all of the cards in your price range, 1660S, 2060, 5700 etc.

If it were me, I would save a few quid extra and get a Ventus 2060 GPU. I have the 2070s of the Ventus and is more subtle for noise and temps than you might think!

Well a little update, i spent a little extra....well about a 1/3 extra and got a Gigabyte gaming OC 2060 super, felt the extra would be worth it for my resolution and might last me a couple years longer! Arriving today!

Another option is a Vega 56. I have Undervolted and slightly clocked mine. I am running at 2560x1440 and everything is playing just fine, worst I have seen its 45-50fps with Borderlands 3 so turned down a few little bits and was back up to 60 (vsync).

I have a freesync 75 panel and 95% of stuff is happily sat on that limit that I play

These seems to be selling around the £170 mark at the moment so inside your budget :)

I said above I actually went for a 2060super although i did look at the vega but again, the worry of AMD drivers just pushed me away, i know its not a super common thing but i REALLY dont want any issues so went for the safe option in Nvidia but paid a premium for that....but in my book thats worth it!

Sorry! Should have read your last post lolol, sat on a break and not using my brain!

2060s is supposedly a quicker card and better at 1440p so great choice :)

I have had my 780 for 7 years now, i spent a premium back then so decided to instead of buying a cheaper 1660super to go a bit more expensive in the hope this card will last 5+ years, the card has a 3 years warranty so im at least guaranteed for that! Its coming in 2 hours time, i just hope the 3 fans are quiet at idle, i returned the Gigabyte 2060 windforce card last year because it was so loud going from fans off to fans on and i couldnt adjust it......so fingers crossed for this gaming oc card!

I can't see a 2060 lasting 5+ years let alone a 1660 Super. With 4K screens slowly coming down in price and 4K will be standardised much earlier than 5 years, the 2060 will be crawling along before you know it.

Well its a 2060 super not a 2060 and i wont be changing monitors as i just got this 1440p Dell, i dont really need ultra also, im happy with min/med settings as long as i get 60fps, i think it will be more than enough for 5+ years since i only really play indie games/less demanding games anyway with the occasional AAA like MHW/GTAV.

Well there's an easy answer to that: don't move to 4k :p

100%, i honestly cant see me wanting that, maybe in the future but i JUST moved from my trusty 10 year old Dell 2007wfp 1680x1050, i still use it as a second monitor, i love the 1440p now as my main but christ that jump crippled my 780, i feel a 4k would do the same to the 2060super in a few years time.

I have to agree that the move to 4K isn't really one I am interested enough to do, that I have to buy a specific piece of hardware to achieve it. I just wouldn't bother as its not going to change my gaming experience enough

As per @chickadee I only went from a lower res recently (1080p myself on the 27th December thanks to Santa) and the quality jump is brilliant. Theoretically I have a pretty good lifecycle left on my VEGA based on current performance I guess :)

I think 4k might become more mainstream in a few years and then a few years after that i will cave and go for a 4k + my 1440p as secondary, i guess that could happen at the end of my 2060 supers life.

1440p really is a huge bump from 1080p, i was shocked at how much space I had on my desktop and i find games look MUCH nicer, they seem to allow a much better view around your character and things like Cities Skylines looks great since you can see SO much on the screen. Its hard to go back. I think 4k would feel the same but i would probably be wanting a 27" and that is too big for my desk, i currently have a 25" Dell which is rather big as it is!

Yeah it most likely will as panel prices are dropping every day across the board. You can get a 28" 4k for sub £200 now, as has been said by a few people you are definitely looking at its uptake increasing quickly over the next 2 years I would say. I almost did it but knew it would open a can of worms with the rest of my hardware sadly :(

Just started to save again for the next jump from the VEGA, maybe a 5700xt or whatever is next from the Red team being so I have a Freesync panel

For now, enjoy the card, it will be night and day vs. the 780 :)

I never really looked into freesync or g sync, does it make a big difference? I dont fully understand it tbh....does it just sync with the card allowing for smoother gameplay?

I think my big jump will be from 3gb to 8gb VRAM, thats a huge jump!

Yes it syncs the screens refresh rate to the GPUs framerate. So if a game is running at 100fps the monitor will also be at 100hz. Its great because screen tearing just disappears and no need for vsync which causes input lag (I notice it a lot in first person games). Definitely worth it if you're getting a new monitor, freesync is the preferred choice now since it doesnt add any extra cost to the monitor like gsync modules do and you can use freesync on Nvidia GPUs now.

Its just one of those things when you have it you cant go back, just like high refresh rate :D
