I'm going to be 41 in the next couple of months. I've got a busy and rewarding career, a healthy family and a good group of friends but I always feel like I want to do something new.

Looking back on my life so far it seems to be that every three or four years I pick some random thing to get up to and run with it.

Now that I'm older it's getting more difficult to find something. It used to be that I could change jobs or pick up a new hobby but now I've lost interest in a lot the things that got me going on my younger days. Last time I made a big change I joined the fire brigade for a bit and did four years part time. It was great but I had to pack it in when my son was born.

Now I'm at the stage where I feel like need something to break the monotony but don't know what to be up to. Don't get me wrong I have a good life, it's just that I think you should always be looking for new experiences. Take in as much as you can while you can.

So how do you guys and girls get your kicks?

Build a new PC or get drunk. Sometimes even go on holiday. I like cars though. But restoring some kind of classic car would be difficult. My dad just put a new kitchen in. What about DIY.

Have an affair.... Nothing like the risk of being caught. Make sure he or she is young too. 21. Is perfect.

When you choose your new hobby do you upload insufferable amounts of pictures to Facebook, be it beekeeping, digital photography, drone piloting, carp fishing, blacksmithing or skydiving....

I'm not speaking from experience :p

Great thread. I just realised, I've done this myself a little recently. 3 or 4 years ago I taught myself to code (although this was based on I might need to make a career change) and really enjoyed making some apps and my own website. Last year I got heavily into cycling and keeping fit and lost loads of weight. Does that count? This year at 45 I'm giving American Football another go, having not played since my knee surgery about 9 years ago.

Are you looking specifically for a physical challenge, or anything? Coding was great to learn and didn't cost much. Sign up on Udemy and never pay more than about £12 for a course and you can learn all sorts for a couple of hundred pounds :)

And I mean everywhere!

7 vehicles (Only three road worthy) four generators (3.5KVa lister ST, Lister 4108 7.5KVa rig I initially built to be a CHP system, Lister 6/1 2.5KVa for same and a little petrol one in case of emergencies! :p )

No!

I am not married!

Was drunk when I posted last night, that's why I was sitting pondering the meaning of life and thought OcUK would have all the answers. :/

You sure? Seems like you know a lot. :D

I can't be bothered with the wife I've already got so I really don't need another woman in my life, especially a secret one.

Don't do Facebook either but maybe I could give it a go. I could take a year and type honest responses to folk's posts. That would certainly be interesting.

You're a brave man taking up American Football at 45.

For now I have a list of:
PC
Drink
Cars
DIY
Affair
Assorted Efour hobbies
Coke & Hookers
Coding
Sports

Who am I kidding I don't have time for a new hobby and should stay off the internet when I'm drunk. Thanks for the responses and I'll go back to lurking around the forum sticking in the odd single line post.

If I do decide to take anything new on then I'll be sure to start a diary thread and post up loads of pictures. 0/

A lower carbohydrate intake? It will make a difference in anything else you do, be it bee keeping, strippers, or stamp collecting.

I make things. Machines, woodwork, 3D printers, cnc stuff, etc etc.
My work is quite dull and monotonous and so I need a creative outlet when I’m at home. I hide away in my workshop and create.

Like I said,

Machines! You can play with them to your hearts content and when you lose interest you can switch them off, close the door, and they wont bother you for attention. :p

Sure, they don't tick all the boxes just yet,

But the Chinese are working on this. Give it a couple of years and you will get the new improved model that will be capable of not only asking if you want another Beer, but actually being able to get up and go to the fridge and get it for you!

I'm also prone to new obsessions. I live in a house surrounded by half finished projects and tools/materials.

All tends to relate to working with my hands. Woodwork, electronics, guitars. I trained as a guitar maker and then an electronic engineer. Lots of specialist tools that get used rarely.

I'm starting to wish I'd just picked up guitar and stuck with that for 15 years :(

I picked about swimming end of 2018, lasted a year then starting getting bored, think I'll still go once per week but not like 3 times a week sort of thing. If nothing else you get a thorough clean, if pool has a steam room then bonus.

I was at a point a few years where I was completely lost and didn't know what to do with any free time I had, but lifting weights got me out of it. I go to the gym 6 days a week now and I love it. Even on my rest day I am itching to get back. I feel better than ever.

I'll probably wind it down a bit in the near future and take up boxing again or something along those lines.
