we are going to be setting up a monthly subscription service for customers and looking at the best ways to take the payment monthly.

i've looked into direct debits and spoke with our bank (natwest), however this is costly and not really something they seem to suggest for the payment value and total amount of customers we'd have, approx £5 per month with max 600 customers over a long time.

i've seen you can have services like stripe/braintree that the customer inputs their card details and these companies will auto take the money from the card each month. something i'm likely to go with, however my concern is how much security we have with this for things like charge backs as it's taken from the card and not the bank account like a direct debit, therefore you have visa, mastercard protection involved which doesn't favour the business.

standing order isn't possible as customers just wont end up doing it and we'll be forever chasing customers.

any other options anyone knows of? thanks

No issues. GoCardless is a direct debit system rather a card charge deal like PayPal or Stripe where chargebacks can happen. If the payment fails you get an email notification and an opportunity to attempt to take the payment again.
