Hi,

My brother has a Dell desktop with no discreet GPU but has PCIE and the PSU has a single PCIE connection

He has a 1080P monitor

He wants play Doom (Not Eternal the previous one)

The problem is, the PSU is only 365W (80 Plus Gold) and the CPU is only an I3.

I think what ever he goes for the CPU will bottleneck the GPU and he'll be limited to low settings and low FPS

What kind of GPU should he look at? I stated AMD because it should have the best performance for that game engine. He has about £70 to spend.

Maybe an RX 560?

Thanks

Second hand rx470s are easy to find for about £60 and will deliver optimal performance. 1080p max settings I don't think they ever drop below 60fps.

Doom 2016?

Pretty well optimised game, either a second hand 470/570 or a 1050/1650 if going Nvidia.

You should be able to get one of the above for around £40-60 I'd imagine, worth putting a request in the Members Market.

My 970 used to easily pump out around 70fps at ultra 1080p on that game. That was on a very old stock 2500k too. They go for around £60-70 now.

Probably my favourite ever card. A pound for pound 1080p king.

Sorry I haven't replied been a busy weekend. Yeah doom 2016.

Will an RX 470 be ok on his PSU with just one PCIE cable and is an RX 570 even better?

Thanks

What make and model is the PSU?

As far as I am aware the RX 5XX series is just a refresh of the RX 4XX series with a slight bump in core speed.

Just go for the RX 470, unless you will pay less for the RX 570.

For reference, you can get...

Refurbished Sapphire Radeon RX 470 NITRO OC 4GB with 12 months warranty for £59 shipped.

Or...

Refurbished Sapphire Radeon RX 470 Nitro 8GB model with 12 months warranty for £69.99 shipped.

Or...

Refurbished Sapphire RX 570 Pulse ITX 4GB with 12 month warranty for £64.99 shipped.

In this instance both the RX 470's in question uses a single 8pin PCIE power connecter whereas the RX 570 uses a single 6pin PCIE power connecter.

Taking into account the small margin in price difference between the 3, with the RX 570 4GB being right in the middle, I would opt for the RX 470 8GB..

Im stuck with an RX550 after my RX470 died. I'm very pleased with the RX550. Plays Doom superbly well at 1080p, no additional power required.
Below are some frame rates in games. The 2 lower figures, Crysis3 and FarCryND were at ULTRA settings, so that's why low. Anyway, £35 or so second hand, well worth it.

Gtx 1050ti or RX570 if buying used. The i3 will hold back a little I’m sure, but unless you want max everything and stupid res etc then doom isn’t as demanding to run as you’d might think.
