Has anyone any experience of this. As part of my mancave project I'm toying with going atmos for PC gaming but I wasn't sure how good it will be (note I'll have ceiling speakers). Cheers

Its pretty neat. have 5.2.2 rather then 7. Some games such as Gears of war 5, Battlefield and Metro some games I play with Atmos do add an extra layer. For me gears in particular or BF when there is something flying overhead sound amazing with Atmos.

Even games which do not support Atmos, find my receiver does an okay job of sending content to height channels correctly, such as Ace combat, flying under clouds with raid hitting canopy coming from above slightly etc.

If its part of a mancave project, may aswell use the opportunity to add the speakers IMO.

At the very least you can wire up for it. Right now I'd say that support is rare, but when it does work it usually works wonders. Honestly, outside of 5.1 there's severe diminishing returns in terms of games using more hardware & in some cases the sound design and mix isn't great anyway. So, is it worth it for gaming? Not really. Heck, I'd say not even for movies is it that much of a great thing, again because of support & quality, though at least here there's a wider selection available so if you're into all these superhero flicks it might be worth it (me - not so much).

Not Atmos, but surround sound related (gaming), and well worth perusing: http://satsun.org/audio/

On the bright side, there's been a lot of noise (heh) made around 3D sound and perhaps even using ray-tracing for it (eg Sony with PS5), so the reason I'd say at least wire up for it is that in the coming years it might take off big time. So definitely something to think about. Also I'd personally go for 4 ceiling speakers when you do it, it does make a difference for positioning but perhaps if the space is too confined it might be overkill.

Rooms going to be something like 2.8m x 3.5m so not the biggest, imagine a single garage with plasterboard for a rough size. TBH i google what pc games support it (i will be getting a PS5 in there at some point too) and BF was the first thing thing i saw and though, yea i bet that does sound good. Also going to .1.4 means a much more expensive receiver, not sure i could disguise that from the mrs lol.

Imo stick to higher end lower number of channels rather than crappy 14.4 or whatever

Not on PC but played the last of us on 7.2.4 on PS4 and super immersive.

Sounds can come from right behind you and you are just in a bubble of sound.

Go for it

Not a huge amount of games support Atmos

Battlefield 1 (not V) does, Forza Horizon 4 does....

AVR will upscale into Atmos anyway, which apparently isn't as bad as it sounds it's actually alright.

In my experience the biggest problem with upscaling for missing channels is the sound coming out of those channels tends to be very quite, but it does capture some of what you expect to be there, so upscaling to Atmos will ad *some* height affect sounds, just not as much or as loud as you would get with proper Atmos encoded audio stream

If the game supports it and Windows plays ball it is very good. You may find the occasional issue with Windows but as long as you can persevere the games that support it use it well.
