What’s more reliable?

He's looking for something reliable not something that falls apart randomly due to sensitive sensors and switches..

He's also looking for eye catching and mentioned a golf. Clearly he's insane and we should take initial requirements with a pinch of salt.

Personally I'd go for as new an mx5 as you could get. Bulletproof reliability. I think they look great and they're a hoot.

Weird choice tbh, neither are comparable.

Ones a drivers car, the other isn’t, which is your preference?

I loved the MX5 and when the new one came out I wanted it even more. So I popped down the dealer to check if I could fit.... ☹️☹️☹️

Being 6ft4 I don’t fit into most cars... Audi TT, Abarth 595 (another car I always like) and now an MX5.

My daily is my wife’s Toyota Yaris which is a great little car but I could do with something a little different.

We have an estate car so I don’t need a family car, always liked the GT86 and sit in them when my goes in for a service.

I do like small cars better but they don’t always fit me....

Everyone i've known with a Golf/Audi A3 has seemed to have a lot more issues than i'd tolerate, broken springs, coil packs, random electrical issues, rear wiper motors, in the cooking models serious engine issues with any of the TFSI or TSI engines etc etc. i'd always go Japanese myself and really loved the GT86 i test drove, it didn't feel much faster than then MK3 MX5 we had at the time but it had a lovely engine and really nice ride which a lot of German stuff seems to lack.

Another thing on VAG engines is oil consumption. According to VW 1L per 500 miles is normal.

Meanwhile a Toyota will go all year without a top up. Including the Subaru engine in the gt86.

A 2015 GTI will be unlikely to use that much.

Similar 2.0TSI to my 2017 vRS and that's used maybe half a litre in the 18 months I've owned it, well over 20,000 miles.

Neither the Mk7 Golf R or Mk7.5 GTI dev cars at work use a drop of oil between changes

To be honest most of my car history has been jap cars as they tend to be most reliable... my wife’s latest car is a Focus Estate but that does 2k miles a year.

I do like the Fiesta ST but every 17 year yob has one....

Never owned a VDub either but I do like the JAP cars although the legroom on these aren’t brilliant.

I've had a 2014 GT86 for 4 years now, and over that time had a failed bonnet alarm switch and the common drivers window scratching (caused by the foam coming off the guide roller).

Both fixed under warranty with no issues.

Warranty is 5 years, a 2015 may still just be in, so I would try look for the common issues quickly and get them done under warranty if needed.

Would buy another one without hesitation, did briefly think about changing, but everything I read tells me I already have the best bang for buck fun daily car.

The GT86 without a doubt. No experience of them but I had a MK6 GTI until it was nearly seven years old and there was almost constantly something wrong with it, leaving me stranded on several occasions.

My GT86 was 6 years old when I sold it and it still looked and ran like new. Barely even any surface rust on the underside too.

There are a couple of things to look for. One being the A pillars on early cars rust because some plastic trim slowly cuts in to them. But you can get them replaced under the 12 year corrosion warranty. Apart from that they really isn't anything major.
