Are german cars still considered premium?

i Hear the new corolla is meant to be very good in every department so I’m willling to bet that’s a better idea than any of those.

Im sure the corolla will be very reliable, no doubt about it but Toyota interiors are utterly tragic

Having seen my 1 series on the back of a recovery truck less than 7 days into ownership from new, and the 'just about good enough' response when dealing with the fault I certainly don't view them as premium no.

It's largely a fallacy, similar to the badge snob view of Skodas being complete garbage despite sharing many components with other VAG cars.

I'd say that VW and Audi are fairly premium as brands? Higher end VWs such as Touaregs etc sit happily alongside Range Rovers and things on the local school run....and things like VW Polos and Golfs are the "go to" for young person cars over the french or japanese brands when people seem to want to uphold an image for their kids.

Audi is definitely a premium brand to me, Q7s and Q5s for example are some of the "go to" cars in their sectors, and priced accordingly

You can't say a Toureg sits alongside a Range Rover when you also admire the Q7 as a premium car. That would make VW comparable to Audi and Audi fanboys would crucify you for such nonsense. Even the Q7 doesn't sit alongside a Range Rover so I'm not sure how a VW can. The Q5 (my parents have one), is a complete woeful attempt at something. What that is, I'm not sure, but premium it isn't.

Weirdly the latest Touareg sort of does. Since the end of the Pheaton it's become the flagship VW - the price of them is absolutely insane, but they are fitted out inside rather better than they used to be.

The list price is between £50k and £62k depending on model - which isn't that much cheaper than a Range Rover Sport.

An odd decision, I doubt they will sell many. People with £60k to spend on an SUV probably don't want a VW. Especially when the Q7 exists.

My parents had a Q5 too. It wasn't a good car.

I don't understand why someone would want to spend that much money on one. It's just another generic SUV.

To be fair though Nasher you don't understand why anyone would like anything you don't. You're basically negative about every car on the market that isn't Japanese.

I've had 5 Series for 14 years. Every single one I've owned has been well made, had a well crafted, had a pleasant interior, driven really well, handled nicely, had great performance, a brilliant engine and with the newer ones an excellent infotainment system. The support from my local dealer has been excellent, the servicing reasonable and with the F10's, reliable and dependable. This is why I buy them. They are great cars.

There’s always something wrong with them though.
Even the e39 with a dodgy cooling system, broken disa valves, vanos seals, various leaks, climate control resistors etc etc oh and xenon adjusters

this is something you do not really get with A lot of Jap cars.

My E39 always ended up with something wrong with it but to be fair it made it to 210,000 miles. I've had no major issues with any of the two F10's I've had or the two F11's my Dad had either. Which means that, on balance, my warranty payments are wasted money, but there we go.

The thing is, I can mitigate against things going wrong by purchasing a warranty but there is nothing I can do to make the Jap cars less awful inside.

Maybe i wasnt totally clear, i am just saying that i would regard VW as "a premium" brand, it certainly isnt a basement brand such as Ford/Renault/Vauxhall/Skoda/Toyota etc. People like VW as a brand and i think a lot of their cars are fairly smart, even though i have little interest in them personally. Totally aware of where Audi/VW sit with regards to oneanother :)

Service is a product of the dealership - an independent, British, business. Some are great, some are terrible. A good argument as to why the franchised model is a sub optimal, but I don't think its fair or reasonable to say 'Audi dealer service sucks'. Some dealers suck, some are good. Just like most other brands.

For example there are companies in the UK who operate both German and Japanese brand car dealerships. So you're buying and servicing your Mazda or Honda from the same company that you'd buy and service your Mercedes or BMW with...

The dealerships operate to different standards though and usually that filters through to the dealership service levels.

generally on a cultural level the Japanese take customer service very seriously, to the point that they will think nothing of bowing to you and apologising profusely for their mistakes, just look at any Toyota recall.
The Germans however have a different Approach.

Ten years ago you’d have a point but today this is a myth.

my Infiniti m37 was just as good if not better than my f10 m5

Seriously? I spent a few hours as a passenger in an M37 and the interior wasn't even close to that of an F10. The steering wheel in particular looks like it's been taken out of an old Corolla.

The F10 isn't all that amazing. It's still a sea of cheap recycled plastic, which creaks when you push on it.

Now I've heard it all :D

I've had the misfortune to receive Infiniti's as rental cars when I've tried to hire a proper Luxury vehicle. I'm not even sure there is any point discussing it with you if you actually think that. Infiniti InTouch for example is a hilarious joke.
