Kettle - should this be legal?

I went to rewire an Asda living kettle and found it was wired on 0.75mm2 flex 'protected' by a 13 amp fuse? Couldn't the wire melt the insulation and cause a fire before the fuse went on such cable? I would have thought 1.25 mm2 cable would be appropriate for a kettle.

Depends on the insulation temperature rating, if it's a kettle, I would have thought the cable insulation would be rated for a fairly high temperature so 0.75mm2 could be acceptable for 13A.

The cable rating and EU compliance should be printed or embossed on the cable itself, if it says 13A, 230/240v then you are good to go. I cant remember the EU standard for cables, but that should be on there too. It is a good while since I worked in domestic electricals, so may have changed now.

Our kettle here has a 0.75mm core too, and 13A rating

I'm not sure what gauge wire my Bosch washing machine uses, but it doesn't feel awfully thick to me considering the potential power draws when the heater is on for about 10 minutes. Sometimes the wire feels slightly warm as the machine is heating the water, but definitely not hot enough to concern me. Thinking about it, I think my kettle wire is thicker than the washing machine's.

If your wire feels as though it's bordering on hot, I would be considering a replacement.

Was just concerned as I checked wiring regs and they say 6 Amps for 0.75mm2... I know this is comparing apples and oranges slightly but it did seem a bit on the skimpy side for 13A

There’s a big difference between a very long cable embedded in a wall and a very short cable in the open air.

If your worried about your kettle don’t open up your oven to look at the internal wiring in there.

2/3rds of our Kettles have 0.75mm2 the others are 1.25 I think one was 1.5 but didn't double check - doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to it though. Though we mostly use a hot water dispenser these days.

was going to ask why you are rewiing its molded plug ? we have the george which award winning kettle - posted on it before.

google "3kw kettle wiring diameter" quickly suggest - https://www2.theiet.org/forums/forum/messageview.cfm?catid=205&threadid=42630
Just to be a little pedantic, BS1363-1 Table 2 (note c) also adds the proviso that "non-rewirable" plugs are used, for 0.75 to be acceptable instead of 1 sq mm for this rating.

personally, indeed, only heating problem I had was on an extension lead where the connection I made worked itslef loose in the socket ... I'd stupidly contacted Siemens about washing machine going off intermittently before I found that.

That's for embedded or shrouded cable with no air cooling.

0.75 on a short unenclosed run is fine for 13a.
