First of all I just want to thank @Gibbo and @NikTheSHNIK for giving me such an epic deal on my new card! Made upgrading from my 1080ti more than worth it for me, personally.
Being a B Grade card, the box was a little worse for wear and the box was possibly missing some of the freebies like stickers etc I've received before and never made use of. The card was well protected in it's anti static bag and high quality soft foam inserts. You'd really have to abuse this thing to cause it any damage
So lets start with first impressions, I thought my Gigabyte Geforce GTX 1080 TI Gaming OC Black 11G was a big card. While they are both roughly the same length this 2080 TI features a beastly cooler making it a tripple slot card. It also requires two 8pin PCI-E power cables compared to the single 8 pin and 6 pin power cables of the 1080 TI. It's also a heavier card so depending on your system you may want to think about anti sag brackets or some such.
Noise wise, I'm genuinely surprised by this new card. Despite it's beefy tripple fan cooler, even with fans spinning at 100% it is not particularly noisey. Far less noticeably than my 1080 TI. Don't get me wrong you still know the fans are running it's just less irritating than other cards I've owned sounding less like a fighter jet and more like fan should sound. In my opinion Gigabyte have nailed the cooler design on this!
It also looks the part with it's 3 edge lit addressable RGB fans, and Aorus logo's on the front and back of the card. Which work well with Fusion 2.0 and provides plenty of colour options. I was planning on adding this to my custom loop but I absolutely love how this thing looks!
But how does the cooling perform. Temps wise I have to say I'm also pretty happy, with the fans running 100% at idle I'm looking at 34c compared with 39c with the 1080 TI. Running the GPU mounted vertically with the side panel on means the fans on the 2080 TI where more choked off than those on it's predecessor. However with both cards running at stock vertically after 10 minutes of heaven benchmark the 2080 TI sit comfortably at 72c compared with the 90c of the 1080 TI. Meaning with the stock cooler there is plenty more thermal headroom for overclocking the card. I've no doubt that particularly including this in a custom loop would show this card to be an absolute overclocking monster.
So how does the card perform compared to my old 1080 TI?
Lets start with Heaven Benchmark using "Jayztwocents" prefered settings as always.
Regretably after recently getting a BSOD that corrupted Windows I lost all my previous Benchmark results, however I can say that this is a much better result at stock! With a FPS score of roughly 61 on the 1080 TI.
War Thunder is probably still my most played game to date. There's no benchmark that I'm aware of but I've already seen a massive increase in FPS with the exact same settings I've seen FPS jump from around 135 FPS to an average of 220 FPS with the 2080 TI.
Next up is Assassins Creed Odyssey, previously this was frustratingly unplayable for me often dipping well below 30 FPS on Medium to High Settings. On the new card with settings all settings on either High, Very High or Ultra and getting the following. What's more no stuttering in this title now, can't wait to actually play this without wanting to blow my brains out.
I could test more games but at this point for me the results really speak for themselves!
Okay so why would I buy such an expensive card now with new GPU's on the horizon? Two things, first of all with this global pandemic in full swing nobody knows for certain what will happen with pricing or availability but best guesses seem to be low availability and even higher prices. Secondly as mentioned I got this card at an insanely good price thanks to Gibbo and Nik.
I would never have bought a 2080 TI at full price personally, especially such a high end model as the Gigabyte Aorus GeForce RTX 2080 Ti Xtreme 11264MB GDDR6 at £1,499.99. I just couldn't justify spending such a large amount on a graphics card and with the 2080 Super even not being a worthwhile upgrade from the 1080 TI I was willing to hold out for the 3000 series to see what that brings. However now owning one I couldn't go back, it's made my gaming experience butter smooth with all the extra eye candy I craved. I haven't even got to the RTX yet. If you have the money to get one now with all this current uncertainty and really want that extra performance while you're supposed to be working from home or are stuck in isolation, get one! I highly recommend it.
