Hi all,

Have got an Ivy Bridge with HT enabled running at 4.6Ghz with 16GB RAM which is overclocked to 2400Mhz with tight timings which is pushing a GTX 780 which is also overclocked. All this is going through a 30 inch 60Hz monitor that's running a rez of 2560x1600 - obviously the GPU is underpowered for modern AAA game titles so was thinking about perhaps a RTX 2080 or another high end GPU to run these games - is the rest of my rig strong enough to do this or is the RTX 2080 overkill for my monitor/refresh rate combo? Wanting to future proof somewhat and also obviously run all the new games in Ultra settings.

The ivy wont run the card to it's maximum potential but it has 8 threads so it shouldn't be too bad.

If you feel your cpu is holding you back you could always sell the 3770k. For some reason people still pay crazy money for the second hand 3770k and a new 6 core 12 thread zen is fairly cheap.

The 2070s should be enough for 60hz on most games at maximum settings.

The 2080s is not really worth the extra unless you get a good deal on one £600-650.

If you can wait until later in the year the new nvidia 7nm cards are out and should have much better raytracing and much more performance for your money.
 
no it wont run it at its max but it wont slow it down that much, honestly though id wait for the new cards and the expected ryzen 4000 series to drop this year before spending money. literally the worst time to be looking at upgrading now.

obviously thats if you want best bang for you're money, but if you need something now get one as you will always get a bump when you upgrade you're cpu later on. depends if you can hang on for later in the year.
 
I presume your running a 3770k, not a bad CPU as they hyperthreading on it stops it from becoming totally obsolete (and the ram speed is pretty good for a CPU that old, lots of us are still running 1600mhz dims) but at some point in the near future you will need to think about doing a whole platform upgrade.

A RTX2080 would certainly give you a massive boost in performance but it's not a good balance with a i7 3770k at this stage. Something like a 5700XT or as migelking suggested a 2070 super would be a better match (but still not balanced) and would leave you with some funds left over to put towards upgrading the rest of your system.
 
Thanks for all your responses - much appreciated. Yes, running a 3770k @ 4.6Ghz w/Hyper Threading. Entirely possible to wait until later in the year for the 7nm NV cards - when are they due? I was kinda thinking of offsetting the cost of a full upgrade till later in the year by buying the video card now (hence thinking of the RTX 2080), but if the 7nm NV cards are reasonably close I'll wait for them. Who knows when that might be at the moment however, right? Is a 2070 super reasonably future proof if I was to migrate to 120hz in the future at 4k, or are SLI 2080's currently required to drive that kind of rez? (sorry for all the questions, used to overclock in my job, but haven't done so in years so just getting back up to speed with what the current hardware is capable of).

If you want future proof gpu wait until the next nvidias are out.

Sli is a thing of the past if you want to drive 4k max settings really you need 2080ti.

Current gen cards lack hdmi 2.1, so it's out of date already.

Current gen cards struggle with ray tracing. Next gen are meant to have twice the ray tracing power.

It's rumoured to be September/October release date but no one knows for sure.
 
The 7nm cards are not reasonably close you would be very lucky to see any new releases this year. Would be better off picking up a reasonably cheap GPU now like has been said and then go the full upgrade next year.
 
Even a 1660 Super or 2060 would be miles in-front of your gtx 780.

I’d go with a 2070S even if you plan to upgrade in the future. The cost for cards above are not worth it for the most part. Even a 2080Ti won’t drive 4k 120hz unless you drop settings by a fair amount. So 2070S or wait for ampere which at this rate will be next year.

And I’d agree with most on here. You could likely sell your 3770k, board and memory and have nearly enough for a 6/8 core zen 2, board and memory.

For some reason people still pay masses for 3770k, z77 boards and ddr3...

Thanks for the suggestions - I think I'm gonna get a card to tide me over until next year as an interim solution - is this one as mentioned above gonna give me good frames on my current rig @60Hz/2560x1600?

Yeah it will be fine. 5700XT is on par with the 2070S so a good card for that price. I'd suggest paying more for a card with a decent cooler perhaps as the blower 5700xt is quite noisy i believe. Will run 2560x1080 + 60hz without much issue.

3770k's go for around £100-150. With that one perhaps more to the right buyer. 3600x's are around £240 (6core,12thread) and likely over twice as fast as the 3770k.

Same story with the board maximus v is around £150! ddr3 around £100 also.

All in all you could sell the cpu, board and memory for around £400-450.

I'd say yes, give it a go. The 3770k can be replaced at a later date if it's not meeting the needs of the games you play. It's only a 60hz monitor, cpu becomes more important at higher refresh rates.
