I was initially looking at a whole new build as i'm now gaming on a 2k/1440p Samsung monitor at 144Hz (with an RX570). The question is, can I save myself a whole bundle of cash by pairing my 6700K with say a 5700 XT or 2070 Super, or will I bottleneck the CPU? Is the 6700K still relevant?

Depends on games. I have a 5820k with 980ti that still does a fine job at 1440p in warzone (lower details i get about 110fps) and overwatch. I think you should try the 2070 super and then if that isn't enough you can look at upgrading the rest.
 
BF5/1, PUBG, Overwatch mainly these days. I suppose it'll help if I can OC this 6700K as well then, regardless of card choice?
 
I've seen my own stock speed 6700K and 980Ti combo struggle a bit during The Division 2, when a lot is happening on screen. The CPU itself is still great but I do wonder if more cores would be beneficial alongside a graphics card update.

is that on 1080p?
 
I ran a 5700xt and 6700k for a few days. Nothing wrong with the combo but returned it due to issues on stuttering it was a Thicc III Ultra. Returning it confirmed the card itself was the problem. So Youll have a decent experience with that combo. So enjoy!
 
I run my 6700K with dual 1080s and at one point a 2080Ti. No CPU bottlenecking at 3440x1440.

If I dropped to 1080p maaaaaybe I would have seen a reduction in potential frame rate but I don't care much for 1080p. :p

Duff artifacting 2080Ti (and its RMA replacement). On release there were a large number of Founders Edition 2080Ti's failing like this. Got a refund via a payment dispute since Nvidia were being unresponsive to my refund requests, and went back to my trusty EVGA FTW 1080s in SLI.

Might dip my toe in again when the 3080Ti gets released. It's simply not worth upgrading to a 2080Ti this late in the day.

Incidentally, my 1080s in SLI outperformed a single 2080Ti in my benchmark testing and games (obviously with no raytracing). I wanted the 2080Ti mainly for increased VR performance (which sadly doesn't make use of SLI in 99% of VR titles).

Interesting, I've got a 4790K (@4.8) which is pretty much on par with the OP's CPU, I'm getting no issues whatsoever with BF1 & BF V @4K with a 1080ti, I'm just waiting for used prices to dip and get a second for SLI (previously had 1070 SLI which was epic in the games I mainly play) - I intend to go the same route with the 1080ti, no intentions of upgrading yet, the cost of a new CPU, Board & RAM just isn't worth it yet to my mind.

Yes, contrary to popular belief and naysayers, SLI is actually supported by most major titles and works flawlessly in my experience. I play BF1 at 3440x1440 and it rarely dips below 90fps on ultra settings. It mostly stays above my monitor's 100Hz max refresh rate.


And my 6700K is still going strong. I might be tempted to go Ryzen at a later date but I'm in no rush. Will wait till DDR5 is commonplace first before investing in a new motherboard.
