My old i7-5820k/X99 PC died last month - What can I salvage for a new Mini-ITX/Micro-ATX build?

As per the title my PC died a couple of weeks ago. Looks like it's the motherboard which has gone though it could be the CPU? I had a look around but the cost of X99 Micro-ATX motherboards seems pretty high, plus I can't be sure it's not the CPU, so I think it may make more sense to buy a new CPU and motherboard. It's a properiatary case so I'd like to replace that with a new one whilst I'm at it.

Specs are as follows :-

Intel i7-5820k
X99 Micro-ATX Motherboard (faulty)
16Gb RAM (2 x 8Gb DDR4 2133Mhz)
Geforce GTX 980 4Gb
512Gb Sata SSD
650 Watt ATX PSU
27" 1440p monitor

So my initial thoughts are that that I'd like to reuse the RAM. It's older slower speed DDR4 but I presume it won't have much impact on a newer CPU as long as it's DDR4.

I don't do much gaming and found the geforce 980 more than sufficient for my needs so I'd also like to reuse it for now. I will likely upgrade to a newer GPU in future though. So any case I buy I'd want to accommodate a full length GPU.

In terms of storage I could reuse the 512Gb SATA SSD though it may make more sense to upgrade to a newer M2 SSD? Open to suggestions on that?

So my plan was to buy a mid range i5/Ryzen5 CPU, Mini-ITX /Micro-ATX motherboard and a new case to match then install my current GPU,RAM,SSD,PSU and connect it to my existing monitor.

Would appreciate any feedback/thoughts on the above and could use some suggestions as to which CPU/Motherboard and Mini-ITX / Micro-ATX case to get?

what psu is it and is it one that came with the case or one you fitted? budget also?

PSU is a Corsair HX850 though it's from my previous system and not the faulty one.

Hadn't really thought about an exact budget but was aiming for something mid-range. Core i5/i7 or equivalent AMD with decent motherboard and a nice case. Maybe ~£400 or something like that but would spend a bit more of there was an equivalent increase in performance/features for the money.

I'd assume that ~£400 would get me a decent CPU, motherboard and case?
