I have cancelled my pre-order for Zotac GeForce RTX 2080 SUPER AMP EXTREME 8GB Graphics Card
I have placed a new order for Sapphire Radeon RX 5700 XT NITRO+ Special Editon 8GB Graphics Card.

I am saving around £260, especially will be only playing games like COD MW on 1440p.

My current graphic card is a Radeaon 7950

I hope I made the right choice.

Dont know whether I am missing something but where can you get the RTX 2080 super for £720 in stock ? Cheapest I can find in stock is £800 saving £380 if buying the 5700 Nitro+ Spec Ed at the cheapest in stock I could find £440 ?

Assuming you win the driver lottery, I think it's a very good choice.

don't give a rat's wotsit for Raytracing

People are willing to pay extra for RTX? What happened to games just being for fun rather than looking pretty? Sometimes this forum makes me feel about 100 years old...

Yes you should have got a cheaper 5700 and flashed it to a 5700 XT bios but otherwise your have an elite GPU be happy and comfort yourself spending the saved money on hookers and booze

Why not both? People like pretty games.

Presumably you should be advising the OP to stick to onboard graphics or a GT 710 and turn the res right down? Maybe play games in a commodore 64 emulator?

There were a ton of great games on the C64.... I still boot some up from time to time. Doesn't mean I can't also appreciate modern graphical wizardry.

You can't right now unless you buy a 2080ti
. The others are too weak for the raytracing that'll come with the next gen gpus

Not sure I’d have gone for a Nitro+ tbh the main selling point of a 5700 XT is £300 (or there about) if you start pushing that envelope then you are into 2070S territory. Either way the 2080S at current pricing is a ripoff... I’m not saying you won’t enjoy the performance but what you paid to get it was terrible.

£1200 for a 2080Ti to play Minecraft RTX 1080p at 60fps - Sorry that just doesn’t work
£800 2080S = marginal improvements over a 1080Ti with **** poor ray tracing perf
Just not worth it unless you need that power today in which case you have no choice and are being over charged for it

Doesn't seem to be true, raytracing entire scenes, sure, but adding a little 'sugar' in the form of better shadows and reflections seems to be fine on all the RTX cards. e.g. Minecraft.

They start arpund £950, not cheap still, of course.

Sounds like a you've made a great choice to me. Saved a lot of money for a bit of a performance decrease. But it's still a massive upgrade from what you currently have in the 7950

You shouldn't feel old, because if you'd been around that long you'd know people will pay for enhanced graphics. I'm assuming this includes you, and that you aren't rocking a low end GPU running lowest settings on every game at 30fps?

While I agree with the sentiment, I don't imagine people would put down £450 on a 5700XT if they didn't care about their games looking pretty.

Its not just about what is cheap though, £1k of GPU needs to deliver £1k worth of performance as that's its job at the end of the day and it simply fails to do that by any historical measure. The 2080S is actually worse imho as you get so little for something you could have had yrs ago at a cheaper price ok without some of the features but there's only a handful of titles that take advantage even now and its about to be superseded in the next 6mnths.

Really, which cheaper GFX card from an older generation has better performance at the same launch price?

Because AFAICT it beats the 1080 Ti by around 10% in tests, and launched at the same price (so a little cheaper if you account for inflation), plus brings extra features to the table. Whether we get new cards in six months is debatable, especially given the pandemic - people have been saying that since before I got my RTX card last July.
