Cheapest 2.xx Second to 60 car?

Is this all hypothetical, or are you hoping to actually buy / build something?

If so, are you hoping to keep this street legal, pass an MOT, and get it insured? Or are we just talking private land drag strips?

The way you mention 'downpipe and a remap' sounds a bit naive as to what kind of compromises you'd need to make to a vehicle to get it to consistently accelerate to 60 that fast.

Currently in an A45 that runs low 3s to 60, does not feel that fast. Been thinking of getting a weekend toy that can run 2.xx, just seeing what the options are for entry in to that club. As gibbo mentioned Golf R's can get close. The downpipe and remap comment was to enforce the idea of light modifications, not looking for something that has to have its turbo's swapped, methanol injection, upgraded fuel systems etc. Yes to street legal, just a weekend toy that is comfortable, yet rapid.

Just something with a few simple mods that is fast.

The problem isn't that you need to get to 60 faster for it to feel fast. The problem is cars like the Golf R, A45 AMG, and everthing along those lines are technically competent, but the driver is isolated from it all, which is why they're kind of boring once you're over the initial "oh wow G force" of acceleration.

Something like a Lotus Exige 380 is no faster to 60mph (slower probably) but is a hell of a lot more engaging to drive for example.

I think you'll get bored whatever you buy that does it in 2.X, once you get used to the speed.

I'd suggest something counter-intuitive here, get a slower car (MX-5, GT86, Boxster??) that's still fun and then when you drive the A45 it'll feel every bit as fast as it is.

The Exige 380 is way quicker I think. Even the 350 is under 4 sec to 60. They also have extremely strong in-gear acceleration.

But Elise/Exige with the roof off and windows down, you can almost touch the road. You can't get that experience in a Golf or A class. The feel, noise, everything is just 10 notches higher.

Exige 380 is also ~£60k...

A new A45 AMG (what OP has at the moment) is £50k RRP before you option it out, worth the extra money if you want a proper performance car. If you want the sensation of speed, you're just not going to get it in the likes of the A45 or Golf R as capable as they are for the reasons @Nasher states above. Also a lot to be said for the engine being directly behind your head.

Start with an Elise, drop some acid and pick up your tools...

I guess it depends if OP wants to spend another £60k.

Mine did it in 3.3s with launch control, remap, downpipe and TCU map. It was not tested with an app on a phone, but Racelogic box and Draggy, plus Santa Pod times, which all three are accurate. Without launch control it was just shy of 4s, speaking from actual ownership and using tried and proven testing hardware. No Apps, no VWOC stickers! :)
Fair enough, but just so I'm clear, there's a V10 twin turbo Golf with 1700hp which hits 62 in 2 seconds. We're saying that I can be only a second slower with only 380bhp (a 1/4 of the power) a remap and zorst?

This all sounds like nonsense. An A45 doing 0-60 in 3 feels slow. Maybe when you're playing gran turismo.

Sorry, but without bread, I'm not buying it.

If you want the feel of serious speed, unless you're either an amature mechanic with a drag strip or a company director with a hyper car, get a bike.

Well the new A45S does 0-62 in what, 3.9? It has a little over 400bhp, so still a lot less than 1700...
