Does Facebook market place need shutting down?

More people need to do this. The less people on Facebook the better.

People are but moving to other social media platforms such as Twitter and Instagram.

People are too nosy and are more interested in whats going on in other peoples lives than their own. Then you have the others who love attention. That will never change.

How often do they have £1 listing days?

For me, this often:

I deleted my Facebook account a few hrs ago and I have not missed it one single bit. I don’t need it to keep in touch with any of my friends, that’s easily solved by picking up the phone and either calling or texting them.
Congratulations.

However some people find it easier to use Facebook.

The majority of people who complain about Facebook need to moderate their own news feeds better and it would solve their issues. I rarely see anything I don't want to on any social media platform as I delete/unfollow people who post dross. Same as OCUK actually! It's much better browsing the forums with certain members on the ignore list.

Can't agree in Twitter. I find it a very useful tool. It really does depend on who you follow though. If FB disappeared tomorrow I'd only miss it for the easy way to keep in touch with friends. These days its just full of ********.

At least you can read Twitter I don't use it but one of my sites uses it for updates so I keep an eye on it. Facebook on the other hand you can't even view content without creating an account. No thanks.

I remember when we first bought our house and wanted to get rid of the previous owners built in wardrobes - had three to shift.
I got rid of most of the furniture from my room in a flat on Facebook marketplace with almost no trouble at all 5 years ago when I moved in with my ex. Bed, mattress, wardrobes, drawers, shelves, desk. Sold for reasonable money as well. Everyone collected.

When I bought my current house a couple of years ago I sold carpets, gas fire, lights and some other stuff. Bought a table and chairs, things for the garden and other stuff I'm sure I've forgotten. Again very few issues main one was a few weeks ago I agreed to collect something but then they gave away to someone else before I got there but I checked before I made the trip so no inconvenience.

Yet I've had attempted scams numerous times trying to sell things on ebay to the extent I just don't bother anymore. And Facebook is far more convenient than gumtree or any other platform

We need more Police to police Farcebook scams. Take them off the streets and send them round to the addresses of these scammers. That'll teach them a lesson!!!

I've only used FB market once, but got the absolute best deal around. Nothing on eBay was within £75 of this or in as good condition, and it was local enough that I just hopped over the road after work to pick it up!

Congratulations.

Some of the kids in here have no idea how to work technology.

Only if everything similar (Gumtree etc.) is closed down too - otherwise they'll just move to wherever everyone starts using instead.

Anywhere with a free to advertise marketplace is going to get abused like this, there's nothing special about Facebook marketplace beyond it's current popularity

I disagree it is great for things that are purchased locally. I bought an xbox one for my daughter a couple of years back for something silly like £68. As long as you collect in person you get to profile the owner. Giving away hundreds of pounds to someone on facebook to get something delivered I would never do however!

Also getting rid of all our baby stuff was a breeze. Most of it we gave away for free but people were more than willing to take it.

He has a point.

Ebay is by far and away the best site

lolwut?

10% final value fee, plus a listing fee and then paypal fees on top.

if you sell something for £740 you end up with around £600 in your pocket afterwards. then you have the fact on ebay you will likely be posting it so increasing cost and time of postage and packaging and increasing the carbon footprint overall rather than local collection.

But the reach you get on eBay, won't be what you get on a local site, so depends on how niche the item you are selling is.

I've tried selling on here and Facebook and gumtree by far and away eBay is the only platform viable.

I've been selling stick insects and have probably racked up 800 pounds of sales. Yes. I'm left with about 650 after costs. But can't sell this stuff locally.
If it wasn't for ebay that would probably be 100 at most.

Ebay has high fees. But time expensive sales right and that 10pc goes to 1 pound.

Only things I've sold on Facebook are tat and free stuff.

Yeah so you can't just say ebay is the best. There is no such thing as best because there are so many variables. If i'm selling worth nothing best to put it on gumtree. Also stuff that can't be insured I'd prefer local collection if valuable too.

Like if I decided to sell my couch or dining table.

Also ebay has more morons on it than gumtree. I've had about 30 auctions on there over the past 2 weeks. I've had 1/4 of them won by scammers and time wasters. I've also had countless idiots make me offers. It's an auction for a reason if I wanted to sell it buy it now then it would be buy it now fixed price. I label something as collection only too heavy or large to post and I get countless morons saying if I win can you post it to me? It's clearly stated in the title collection only.

I also sold a single item of what is usually a pair. I clearly took a pic of a single item. I said in the description it's a single item and I don't have the other half and the guy who won it said sorry I thought it was for 2. He didn't bother to read the title, look at the pic or read the description. I then had to re-list and it sold again for a bit lower and being collected today.

Ebay is good. But I've paid around £800 in fees over the past 2 weeks. 10% is far too much then 5% paypal and then postage and packaging on top.

I've paid around £400 in postage fees in 2 weeks too. So £1200 gone from my money on fees and postage.

I've not had a £1 final value fee in months. I normally stock pile all my stuff I want to sell in a corner and then do a bulk upload when I get the offer but I couldn't wait for the stuff I wanted to shift as it's gone up in value due to covid. So i had to strike whilst the iron is hot. No offers on at the moment. I bet you there is next week as it's all sold now.

Luckily all the collections I've been offering cash on collection for a 5% discount and most took me up just 1 didn't. Then agree to cancel the ebay listing so I avoid all the fees.

Also it's funny how even offering bank transfer, all preferred to bring cash. I've subsequently had to go to the bank to bank it and the branch is only letting 1 person in the building at a time even though they have 2 tellers. So the other one just sits and waits whilst the other one deals with the 1 who is allowed in.

If you don't like the fees then don't use the service. If you use the service you should pay the fees you've agreed to.

Of course some characters make use of the service and then dodge paying the fees. Oh...

Not surprised with that view.

Yet when I said the other day on here everyone gets offered 20% off for cash in hand jobs on plumbing, sparky, painter and decorators and mechanic and they have no issue with that yet want the tax man to go after big companies only. You can't have it both ways. You can't say they should pay what is due but its okay for John down the road to take cash in hand and effectively have a market edge by doing so by cheating all legit taxpayers.

Avoiding ebay fees is nowhere near the same league as that yet plenty on here are okay with people dodging tax so long as there company isn't names amazon, virgin, Starbucks, Google, etc.

So why the uproar on avoiding fees on ebay which are quite frankly ridiculous for a simple auction site.

If a competitor came out that took a fair amount I'd switch they have a monopoly which means they can get away with charging whatever they want.

If I can avoid the fees it would be stupid not to. It should be £1 like their offers are.

After all I've been stung on ebay on time and money due to all the morons on there wasting my time or buying something then wanting a return because they cannot read a title or description which is concise and clear. They always side with the buyer even if he's special needs. Removing feedback to buyers was terrible. It's as if they don't care about sellers at all. I've had 3 people not pay for stuff they won in the past week alone. With no come backs. You can basically go on there bid on every auction on the site win it all then turn around and say sorry don't want it please cancel and you don't get a public black mark on your feedback.

But a seller gets 1 stupid buyer complain and boom you get negative feedback then have to rely on their customer support, more time and money to get it removed.

I've never attempted to sell an xbox box for £300 unlike some. I sell stuff I'd buy myself.

Ebay is quite frankly horrible but it's the only option as they have a monopoly for public auctions.

If I can avoid their fees I will. They can get stuffed. Their practices against sellers are ridiculous. Buyers can do whatever they want with no consequences.

Self-justification.

Not surprised by your response.

You used ebay so you could strike "while the iron is hot" and then try to justify not paying their fee because ebay is horrible.

Without ebay you wouldn't have sold those items for the prices you did, you should have paid their fees.
