Hi.

I have an i5 4690k overclocked to 4.5mhz, z-97k motherboard, 8gb ddr3 ram, GTX970 GPU.

I want to be able to use VR and ideally have a life span for the next 4\5 years

Will the cpu still be ok or is it worth upgrading to an i7 9700k and overclock that?

If it is to upgrade everything my budget would be 1700.

Thanks

Wait a month till the new 10700k is released as its the same 8 core part but with hyperthreading enabled so basically a 9900k for the price of the 9700k and its on a new socket so you will have a better upgrade path with Intel 10nm CPUs coming next year.

Rocket lake is 14nm++++++, because of 10nm being FUBAR for high end.
And it will be 8 core, because of 14nm++++++ just not fitting more of bigger cores designed for 10nm.
Higher power consumption of beefed up (and hopefully less vulnerable) cores might well also limit clock speeds negating some of architectural improvement.

Similarly clock speed scaling problems of 10nm have even limited laptop CPU performance against 14nm predecessors.
(no power consumption advantage at high enough clock speeds for performance)
