How to make my PC silent (Or at least quieter)

Hi all, me again..... :)

Sorry to keep posting but after faffing around with various ideas and putting budgets together I've finally figured out what I'm looking to do with my PC and why my current one is working for me.

  • Intel 5820K @ 3.3GHz
  • 32GB Corsair Vengeance 2400MHz (4x 8GB)
  • EVGA X99 MATX Micro 2
  • NVidia GeForce GTX 1080 (Founders Edition)
  • Corsair H60 CPU cooler (Push pull with 2x EK Vardar F1-120 fans)
  • 2x EK Vardard F1-120 fans as case fans
  • EVGA 1000W P2 PSU

I would like to try make my PC quieter than it is now as it's in a botched state from when I didn't finish my last W/C project.

So far (When working from home and using folding@home) I'm getting deafened by my GTX1080FE (Not an ideal card but again, I was supposed to watercool it).

In full load use it is running at around 50c on the CPU and 75c on the GPU after messing with the cooling in the case

Originally I wanted to go ITX however after some studying it seems ITX and quiet don't go well and without watercooling and lots of radiators it will be no better than it is now.

So far from what I can see I can't go lower than MATX or cooling is just going to be a nightmare. I definitely need a new GPU cooler but at the moment I'm restricted based on my case and motherboard due to the headers on it. The best bet is something like the following (Swap out the GPU cooler as needed)

My basket at Overclockers UK:
Total: £322.23 (includes shipping: £12.30)

I could go ATX but then I'm going for a bigger system than I have now and I'm trying to keep it small too but if needed I could make a new build along the lines of this?

Any help would be greatly appreciated and sorry for the continuous threads but It's been a while since I last build a PC (Generally only dabble on servers now in my work and free time)

Water cooling.
If not, then you need less fans, and more high quality ones.
I was hoping I wouldn't have to watercool again, in terms of the fans I was thinking the Noctua S12's for airdlow and the F12's for any situations they need static pressure (Heat sinks etc)

I thought it may be worth while having more fans at a lower RPM as well?

Can I suggest more fans, you can then get more air for less speed. Noctua are good. Plus sit down & figure out your airflow.
This was my line of thought with lots of Noctuas :)

I Think you can do this cheaply if have time & patience.
Buy these & out the Corsair cooler & EK fans. Install MSI afterburner to control the GFX card fan speed (If you get stuck on how to do that, someone here may be able to help you as I've never used said piece of software!)
*snip*
Thats a meaty cooler, I was looking at the Dark Rock Pro 4 but it wouldnt it my case (Hence the new case). For my GPU I tried tweaking the speed but then it runs at 85c which is a bit hot for my liking which is why I thought about the aftermarket cooler

I have 4 Arctic P12 PWM fans in my case with an Air cooler, I've sat at the PC for a bit of time fiddling with fan speeds and curves and it's not completely silent but my god its better than when I first put them in and temps are nice and low

I thought the rule was you add an additional 3db for every extra fan. So two 20db fans would be 23db and so on.
It must depend on the RPM of them?

I'm not looking for complete silence, sadly my last build did that (Was a custom ATX loop) but I never got round to rebuilding it properly. I'm just looking for a humm that I can sleep with whilst its on

What is the pc doing while you are sleeping? All my fans stop at certain temps and pc is pretty much silent apart from cap\electrical humming.

That's going to be tricky even with great fans.Might have to let the temps rise a little with custom fan curve to get it to sounds acceptable.

As long as I can get rid of the hairdresser whine of the GTX 1080 I'll be pleased, I'm willing to do anything other than custom watercooling as I just dont have the ability to maintain it anymore. Even if I need to buy a new CPU etc I'm up for it

Probably could get them aftermarket gpu coolers like the Accelero.
I'm thinking thats going to be on my list, unfortunately that rules out MATX for me but I'm coming to terms with the fact that the noise and heat levels I want just wont work with the SFF formfactor. So far I'm thinking of the following to lower the systems TDP and increase cooling

I got the same board and cpu and it is great but i would get new ram as the ones you got are slow. Many of us have good results from the crucial ballistix but they might have other better value ones about now.

Yeah, I haven't made up my mind on the RAM yet but I know I'm going for 3200MHz as that seems to be the best price to performance, other than that does there seem to be any gaping flaws in the system (E.g. could I get a better case/fans etc?) :)

Just to chip in on case options. I was eye balling the Fractal Define 7 until I came across the Phanteks P400s/P600s.

I haven't yet decided on parts for my next build but I have just ordered the P600s so i would recommend taking a look at it (obviously glass panels are also available but I don't care much for the flashing lights / RGB).

When you are talking about Crucial Ballistix, are you meaning the BL2K16G36C16U4B? 3600Mhz, 2x16gb 16-18-18-38?

The Crucial Ballistix Sport LT BLS8G4D32AESBK 3200 overlock really well but have since gone up in price.

But the ones you linked to might actually be better tbh especially if you can get the timings tighter.
