Theres a twitter storm going on because Bbc news presenter Fiona Bruce called low skill workers low skilled. What is wrong with that ?

the jobs she refers to aren’t exactly skilled. Is this just another example of crazy twitter people?

Judging by the comments it's general twitter garbage.

Low skilled is exactly that. People getting offended by the fact that cleaning is low skilled. It's exactly that. No one is saying anything against those people.

Bus driver wouldn't be classed as low skilled. For a start, you need to learn how to drive in the first place. So many cant even do that and end up not driving at all.

I don't know what the requirements are, but the jobs she mentions are below the average I suppose.

Reading off an autocue is irrelevant, other than the fact she didn't write it. She's not an 'autocue reader'. Reading from an autocue isn't easy, and even if it was it doesn't make your entire job low skilled anyway.

Low skill often seems to be a silly shorthand way of saying anyone who doesn't need/use a university qualification.

I wouldn't say hair dressers are "low skilled", they don't have university qualifications for the job, but usually have hundreds (if not thousands) of hours of training, formal qualifications, specialist training and education in handling dangerous chemicals (doing dyes/bleaches requires additional training and exams as you're dealing with chemicals that can blind, and using them near the eyes etc).
HGV drivers don't need a degree, but usually have hundreds of hours of training, going to thousands of hours of training and specific experience before they can handle certain load.

High skilled jobs are typically those which the layman couldn't do. Ones which require a high aptitude or natural ability.

Any gimp can kick a football. Not everyone, no matter how many hours they put in, is going to be Ronaldo.

The same goes for some trades. I can cut stone, I can work timber, am I ever going to be a master mason or cabinet maker? Nope. I don't have the ability. Training me would be a waste of time.

Training you would be a waste of time if you had no desire to excel in those fields.

The idea that only certain people could become master masons, for example, doesn't strike me as particularly logical. It's all about putting in the time. Which is obviously not something you'll do if you have no interest.

What particular natural ability do you think is required for carpentry or masonry, that not everybody could possess?

Low skilled labour is just jobs that require a bit of on the job training and you're set. Most of us have done low skilled work at some point, it's not an offensive term. People have serious issues these days getting angry at absolutely everything someone in a remote position of authority or power says.

It doesn't take a lot of skill to put tinned beans on a shelf where you are told to do so.

Just because a job requires little skill doesn't mean it has no value to society. People are linking the two together and getting annoyed.
