Skylake delid

Hi all,

I recently bought a used 6600k which I plan to delid. I was hoping some folk could share their horror stories and advice when it comes to delidding.

At the moment i am planning to use a razor blade even though I am aware their are tools out there.

this one looked cool, but i don't have a printer.

Right now I'm thinking about using this thermal paste, https://www.overclockers.co.uk/ther...mance-thermal-paste-11.1g-3-ml-th-000-tg.html, but I'm of course open to suggestions. Although with that being said, i'm not so sure about liquid metal on my first attempt.

You're going to use the razor blade method but balk at liquid metal? :D

I would strongly suggest you use a proper tool, I have a der8auer Delid-Die-Mate 2 as I had a number of CPUs to delid. It's very good, there are cheaper ones about though.

Regardless of what you use, if you're going to the effort of delidding it, you should definitely use liquid metal. Thermal Grizzly Conductonaut is the one to use. I took 21c off my 6700k and was able to passively cool a Kabylake CPU (for an HTPC).
 
XD to me buying a delid tool for just one cpu is a waste and I don't know of anyone locally who already has one or any service. i was also thinking it would be ok as there doesn't seem to be much to damage on these skylake processors.
that being said, i'm a little ignorant, which is why i'm here.

the reason i was staying away from liquid metal was the conductivity side of things. i'm not saying for sure, but if i wanted to get into ln2 i wouldn't be able to experiment with that chip either.
with your 6700k did you apply any insulation to the pcb?
 
Coat the chip side of the cpu (NOT THE CHIP ITSELF) with conformal coating or nail varnish, then once you've used the sealant there are no conductivity issues.
