I have always had my GPU in the PCIE 16x slot but recently purcahsed an NVME M2 adapter that goes in the PCIE 4x slot. This halves the x16 to 8x when in use.

I have noticed no different at all in benchmarking when the GPU is running x8, Heaven 4 score actually went up a few points.

Does this mean that PCIE x16 will not properly come into use until we see the likes of 4080Ti GPUs? These test have been carried out with an overclocked 2080Ti

Try testing it in a game that is VRAM heavy, and see if it makes a difference when it has to stream in new sections of the map/level as you are moving through it.

Is there a benchmark or something to test this without just guessing? Thanks
I don't know of any game benchmarks that do that tbh. (Maybe someone else is aware of some?)
In terms of games that are VRAM heavy i believe FF15 is quite VRAM heavy and there is a demo on the store if you don't have the game.

In terms of FPS benching it seems minimal...

I don't have FF15 or have ever played any of the series

Guess i'll just see how I get on with the few games I play.

Edit, doing some more testing it seems to impact it which a bit when using gsync and vsync

I had issues in Wreckfest a while back on a PC - massively low frame rates while GPU showed 100% usage. Heaven and other benches showed normal scores.

Finally found the card was being recognised at PCI-Ex4 only. Reseated a couple of times until it was recognised as x16 and then frame rate was back to where it should be.

Think this was a PCI-E gen 2 machine, but might be an example of a game that's sensitive to PCI-E bandwidth. Plus, it's a damn fun game to have in the collection anyway (and quite cheap on cdkeys).

Its massively impacted going from 16x to 8x...
