Hi all,

Finally giving in and upgrading my 7700k. I'm planning to leave my existing PC as much as possible intact and sell as a whole system in the near future. Understand there are better value options but just want the best possible gaming performance.

In terms of what I have:

  • Samsung 512 m.2 still boxed
  • 1080 ti from my old system i will use until next gen cards come out.

Rest I need, below is what I have at the moment. Sold on the Lian-li case. I also want Corsair RGB fans, not sure how many I need or best config.

Not sold on motherboard just I've also bought the equivilent but happy if there are better options.

Want a 1 tb SSD. That's it for storage. the m.2, I will use as my boot drive.

Below is what I have so far. Use, gaming only. I'm running a 1440p ultrawide 100 hz. Again this may be upgraded in the future to something with higher hz. Appreciate your help, thanks.

I think 3 extra fans along with the AIO will be enough. Buy this pack: Install them as intakes at the back, AIO in the roof as the fans are set to exhaust by default. Like this:

This is my PC 011D

Lian-Li PC-011 rig photos?

I also think you are paying too much for the board, You should really look at comparisons with other Z490 boards & see what features you don't need. If you are set on buying it & you owned the Kaby lake version of that board then fair enough.

Better value for money with Ryzen. Also expect Ryzen 4000 to close the gap a bit more. As you are gaming at 1440p it isn't a huge deal breaker anyway for most games.

You can add some Corsair fans to replace the Alphacool ones if you want. You would also need 3 more fans, or 6 if you want to fill all fan mounts.

The Alphacool is just a much better built cooler as you get a copper rad instead of Aluminium and a better pump.

They also do an ARGB cooler as well for a bit more money, but the fans are not sold on here. You would have to Google 'Alphacool Eiszyklon Aurora LUX PRO Digital RGB'

The Razer version case just has a bit of extra lighting at the front and underneath, but costs an extra £35. You also get that fugly Razer logo on the front :o

Not sure if you have to use their Razer Synapse software as well to control the RGB case lighting. You could always add RGB strips if you want more Rainbow Unicorn vomit :D

Thanks all

@tamzzy think i owe you a beer. I've been through all the benchmarks. At 1440p, from my reading looks like I will see very little difference from my 7700k. I've delidded and running it at 5.1 ghz currently.

Why won't intel take my money. Really want to upgrade but for such small gains, I'm not sure I would even notice. Think the conclusion is be patient and pre-order 3080 ti as soon i can (or whatever it is) which i'm sure will be a substaintial upgrade from my 1080 ti.

@lee32uk Thanks. I will get that cooler when I do upgrade. I really do just game and the CPU looks very similar performance wise to my 7700k at 1440p.

Haha believe it or not I actually do select tasteful colours, just give me some warning if you're checking! Always nice to have the option. You never know when you might want to stare at your PC changing colour to pass the time.

intel "10 gen" is basically "6 gen" with more cores tacked on. there is no ipc gains as it's basically the same core. so a 5.1ghz 6700k/7700k will run exactly the same as a 5.1ghz 10900k in single threaded workloads.
though that being said...more and more games are now starting to become multithread aware; so i suspect what you'd probably find is that although the avg fps doesn't budge much...having more than a 4c processor will improve the experience as the min fps is going to be much higher - hence a smoother gameplay

Why won't intel take my money.
because they've got nothing of value in comparison to ryzen, tbh
there's a reason why no one wanting value for money is opting for intel atm

Exercise patience. Zen 3 will reward you.
I think 7700K should keep you going until 3080Ti. Perhaps invest in high level memory kit now, to squeeze couple percent more performance from it.
