I Have no idea if i am in the minority here but i have been enjoying sky fire max using a old bt modem connected to my asus RT-AC87U (running merlin) ,This has served me well and has been a lot better than the sky offerings.

In comes 2020 and the new sky ultrafast (gfast if i am not mistaken) is it still possible to use this set up or will i need to buy a new modem/router all in one or can i just buy a new modem for gfast and then use my current asus router.
I am getting my ultrfast installation on 28th may.

Thank you in advance for the help.

Non BT g.fast installs are given a modem that supports the appropriate standard similar to what you have now. I can’t see Sky offering inbuilt g.fast to the latest hub, it’s a dead end technology now.

Is it possible to buy a separate G.fast modem in order to use your own router or do you need to use the Sky router in modem mode, if it’s available?

I am not sure about g-fast i was sort of hoping to do that. but then i have heard the new sky hub is better than the previous ones so i duno what to do lol.

No point replacing, or planning to replace, ISP supplied equipment until you've tried it.

For most people, a router upgrade is mainly an attempt to improve wireless performance. If that's the aim, the ISP router plus a third party WAP (or wireless router configured as one) is usually a perfectly reasonable solution.

In the past my asus router has always synced at better speeds and never dropped . Using previous sky ones i have found them to be a pitta especially in a very busy 24/7 household connected to multiple devices/pcs and smart home tech. that is why i always used asus routers.

Prime example of user buying into hype. The modem synced, your router just passed login credentials. As to the wifi point, the old Sky SR02 has a device cap, but if you want better Wi-Fi you install an AP or mesh, not replace one average AIO router with a more expensive average AIO router with marketing hype. The modems do come up for sale occasionally, but they fetch upto £300 last I looked (I sold one ‘cheap’ for slightly under that). I’m surprised Sky have bothered to push g.fast into the hub though, OR have all but stopped enabling exchanges and are pushing FTTP for all now, then again it’s got to be about 18 months since I went to g.fast and literally everyone apart from BT had gone with a separate modem.

If you were using an RT router it wasn't syncing to anything, the modem it was plugged into was doing that.

no matter how you look at it yes the modem was doing the syncing, what i should have said was the asus combination of the external modem and router had a better sync. people are so fast to jump lol

I've never seen Gfast do anything other than underperform

Context is everything, todays ADSL/ADSL2 and FTTC comes with quite accurate estimation of speeds, in the early days as I am sure you remember, it wasn’t like that, if I look at the speed checker results on OR now, they have been revised down for g.fast. Even going off the original estimates my line performs in line with what I expected. Would I prefer FTTP? Yes, but it’s just not available for me yet and leased line/FTTPoD make little sense for me. I can saturate the connection in both directions 24/7 easily enough and it’s FTTC money, so it’ll do.

Hi guys.
Does anyone know if i can use my current Asus RT-AC87U as a wifi extender to my sky sr204. So in other words have my sky all in one modem/router downstairs and use the the Asus RT-AC87U upstairs to extend the wifi ? will this work is it hard ect to do ?
Thank you

Just an update.
I had sky ultrafast 1 installed yesterday. personally i am not very impressed. I was told i would be getting around 138 down and 28mb up. anyhow something like that i am only getting 86mb down 11.5 up/ no idea if i need to reboot my sky hub or not to achieve higher speeds at all.
As i thought would happen. the new sky hubs wireless is okish not the best but isp router shave improved a lot. the wifi signal is not quite strong enough to cover my house. so i used my asus router in ap mode. all i can say is wow. i chucked it upstairs now we have nice wifi all over the house. now the waiting game to get max speeds for the internet ?

Is there anything i should know roughly how long does it take to get max speed. should i be rebooting my hub to try and get a higher sync ect ?

Like FTTC g.fast has a claimed 10 day training period from memory, as such you're going to need to wait the 10 days before they will investigate, if it's not hitting the hand back threshold, OR will investigate. Usual rules apply, leave the hub alone, do not reboot it as this will likely have the opposite effect to what you desire.
