Putting together a new build and plan to use a 3600x I already have. I had originally planned to buy a B550 motherboard as that would give me some benefits but I can buy a solid MATX B450 now and that should get Ryzen 4000 support later down the line if I so wish to upgrade.

Looking at:
MSI B450M MORTAR MAX Micro ATX AM4 Motherboard for £96.

Do you think it's worth waiting for B550 MATX boards and keeping in mind the price. If a B550 starts at around 30-40 more?

I couldn't see a price on there. That's my main concern, the price. I won't be making use of PCIE 4.0 and I should get support for 4000 CPUs on a B450. The motherboard I mentioned seems solid for the price.

I know fighting impulsivity is hard, but there’s no harm in waiting. If they are more expensive, then buy a B450 :-)

There are no prices. Says TBD

oh damn they took the prices out lol
it was there the last time i looked

from what i recall (prices may be off by $10 or so for the ones with the "~"):
PRIME B550M-K = $99
TUF GAMING B550-PLUS = ~$170
ROG STRIX B550-I GAMING = ~$190
ROG STRIX B550-E GAMING = $249

Seems pricey, but that would also make me a hypocrite, lol.

I have the same question over B550, but I'm looking for mITX. I think at this point there's no harm in waiting to see what the actual pricing is going to be like.

I was also concerned over buying a B450 board and BIOS compatibility with Zen2

lol AMD Ryzen 3300x (future support PCIe 4.0) will beat my pc right now! and also Intel with Gigabyte (greedy companys) cost nearly £178 more dearer!)

Intel Sandybridge i7 2700K @ 3.5GHz (4C/8T) 95W PCIe 2.0 & Gigabyte Z77X-UD5H rev 1.0 PCIe 2.0 £427.98 brought both from ocuk 16th May 2012

AMD Ryzen 3 3300X @ 3.8GHz (4C/8T) 65W PCIe 4.0 x16 & Asrock B450 Pro4 PCIe 3.0 £229.98 current price from ocuk or wait for new Asrock B550 Pro4 PCIe 4.0 from 16th June for price around £119.99 for the board :p

Perfect spec for upgraded from sandybridge to ryzen 3 for budget pc for my normal use.

Just to give an update, I ordered the B450 board in the end. The MSI B450 TOMAHAWK MAX is a solid board at 105GBP. I don't need PCIE 4.0 and I may or may not upgrade to a 4000 series CPU. If I wait then the prices and availability of this board could change.

Just curious as to why you've drawn a line through pcie4?

I already have b450 and contemplating b550

I don't see the benefits of PCIE 4.0 being of any benefit to me. Gen 3 SSD speeds are already really good and GPUs I haven't seen any evidence of it making a difference. By the time it's making meaningful improvements to actual daily usage, then I'll re-asses.

It's easy to get hyper focused on the specs when putting a build together, but when you look at what you use your PC for you have to decide if it's actually going to make a difference. I think a lot of it comes down to people feeling warm and fuzzy knowing that have xxxx under the hood, even if they could get the exact same experience for less.

Completely agree with what you've said but with the new consoles coming and the new GPUs we might start to see pcie3 start to become a bottleneck

No one knows for sure though and like you say it's more expensive to cover yourself for it even though it might not be needed

I'd be surprised if I kept my PC for 2 years so for me what I buy now is going to be absolutely fine for that period of time. I haven't seen the PC hardware landscape change drastically over the years.

Price for the B550 MSI Tomahawk is $179, so happy I paid £105 for the B450 version.
