Some games are freezing with RTX 2070 super

There are some games (list below) which will freeze my pc, when I play them, roughly 5-20 minunte into the game, everything stops, I still have an image on screen, but mouse and keyboard don't respond, I can't ctrl+alt+del, the game don't crash, I am forced to hard reset the pc, and I get no error whatsoever (which makes it very difficult to troubleshoot).

My system :

Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-9700 CPU @ 3.00GHz
NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2070 SUPER
gpu Driver Version: 26.21.14.4614
DirectX Driver Version: 26.21.14.4614
OpenGL Version: 4.6
Xonar SoundCard
16GiB ram

The games (that I know of) which generate a freeze:

Two point hospital
Planet coaster
My time at portia
Niche - a genetic survival game

I want to point out that these games are far from the most ressource intensive games, I can play for example, Ark:survival evolved or plenty of VR titles with no problem whatsoever.

I've updated all the drivers I could think of to the latest, a few software also.

Sonething interesting is I've tried one of the games in safe mode, it runs with no freeze (I played for more than an hour), of course the game is super slow in safe mode, even on lowest settings, which doesn't really solve the problem.

I'm kinda loosing it over this issue, I've been trying to fix this problem for 4 months now, the pc is relatively new (custom built by OverclockersUK ~7month ago).

I'm starting to think maybe the graphics card is faulty. Anyone has an idea what to do ?

Temperature is ok, under stress goes to 73C (these game don't come close to that).

I've tried different version of the GeForce game ready drivers, same problem with every versions.

are any of those games that freeze in a alpha/beta state?, if so likely the developers haven't quite added support for such a new gpu, or haven't tested on new hardware

i wouldn't think the psu is bad as the op said ark survival works ok, i checked the list of games that keep freezing and the pc specs for each are well within what is needed, most need legacy hardware from at least 5 years+ ago, with planet coaster being the most demanding title with a recommend gtx 980 needed.

Hard lockups like that tend to be CPU/RAM related, if the card isn't overclocked it would usually just reset the nvidia driver. ARK is much more GPU intensive whereas those other titles are likely working your CPU and memory a little more at higher frames.

@Ayahuasca I've tried one of those games in safe mode which in my understanding prevent gpu drivers being used and I was able to play for more than an hour (even though it was very slow and laggy), I've never been able to play that particular game that long in normal mode without having a freeze.

This leads me to think it was caused by a driver/harware/software that was not used in safe mode, from my current understanding, that would exclude cpu/ram.

If it was cpu/ram related, is there anything I can do to test it and/or eventually fix it ?

I have freezes witout manually launching anything apart from steam and then the game, I did exactly the same in safe mode

What is currently enabled for startup :

Avast AvLaunch component (was freezing before I installed it)
CCleaner
NordVPN (I don't use it while playing)
Spotify
Steam Client bootstrapper
Windows Security notification icon
Xear audio center

I've got other app in this tab, but they are disabled for startup:

Discord
Docker Desktop
Java update scheduler
LGHUB (logitech)

has your motherboard got a hdmi/display port built in?, you could try this and see if the older games work as intended as your chip has a igpu

I've just noticed above that you've ran a stress test so that may rule out the CPU and memory depending on which test it was and how long you ran this for.

To be safe you could run memtest from a USB boot drive and do an overnight run on Prime95.

With it still being covered by OCUK though and the problem persisting for months on end I would just let them sort it before you potentially bork it!

@wookiee87 Yes I will try that, I'll reboot with the display plugged on the motherboard, and try to play like that

@Ayahuasca I ran furMark for 20minute, apart from having the fans speed up to 100% and the gpu going to 73 degree C, it went fine, I've also ran ubuntu memtest (I have ubuntu installed in dual boot with grub2), no issues

@chroniclard I've never looked at windows eventviewer before, I'll have to google a little about it to understand how to use it/look through it, and I'll report back if there are anything

Event viewer will more than likely have an error in it, so definitely check that out. Whether that actually helps is another thing entirely. :p
