Strange Issue - Monitors go off, fans spin up

Hi all,

Wondering if anyone has had any similar experience or could point me in the right direction. Basically all my monitors go off (black, lose signal etc) and the fans inside the case all spin up. From what I can tell, its most fans. The only fan that isn't spinning is the power supply.

Windows is still running in the background as I can hear sounds like Spotify or game sounds. I can't seem to get the screens back on, even if unplugging the DisplayPort/HDMI cables in and out of the graphics card. Normally takes a full reboot. Will happen quite regular now and sometimes 2 times in a short period of time.

The specs of the system are below:

  • Windows 10 (Version 1909)
  • CPU: Ryzen 7 3700X (No overclock, just whatever it comes with out of the box)
  • Motherboard: MSI B450 TOMOHAWK MAX
  • PSU: Corsair RM650x
  • Ram: Corsair CMK16GX4M2A2400C14 Vengeance LPX (4x8GB Sticks, Total: 32GB Ram)
  • GPU: Gigabyte GeForce RTX 2070 Super
Any help would be greatly appreciated - Sometime has suggested I should see what happens if I remote desktop into the PC when it does happen next so I will be doing that. But any other ideas or possible causes would be great to read about.

Have you tried some different troubleshooting like certain RAM sticks removed etc

I haven't yet as I thought because Windows seems to be still running with music playing and all that jazz that the ram would have been ok. I can give it a go but the ram did pass with flying colours on a memtest not long ago.

Are you able to test your system with an old GPU you have lying around?

I do have one I can swap it with for testing. I've just installed the latest GPU drivers and seeing the next time it does it. As I am going to then try and remote desktop into it and see what Windows is doing.

Did you install Valorant by any chance? I had similar crashes from vangaurd

Nope - I typically play a lot of flight sim though when it normally happens (Prepard3D V4)

Update - As it just happened again moments ago. I grabbed my laptop and was able to remote desktop into the PC. Windows is running still - I did notice that the graphics card was missing from HWMonitor and also task manager. The device manager had ! mark for the device.

What was also interesting is that I have the case fans, keyboard connected to iCue (Corsair Software) which then says "No devices connected". This is probably what causes to spin the fans up as nothing is then controlling them?

Are then heading for a graphics card problem then? The iCue bit makes it a bit confusing. Might have to get the old graphics card out and swap it and see if it then does it with that.

This rings a bell. Try removing iCue.

Uninstalled iCue and also CPU-Z and HWMonitor as there was mentions of iCue using CPUID? Anyway, did that rebooted. Still happens.

I'm going to remove the gpu and replace it with my old one and see what happens.
