We have a ground floor rear extension that backs onto our single garage. Both of these rooms have a flat roof which we are looking to convert to one tiled pitched roof, with a few Velux windows in (on the rear extension portion, not garage).

How do you find a decent reliable builder/roofer, and how much roughly would such a conversion cost do you think?

I tend to ask on a UK wide computer shop forum geared towards overclocking.

If that fails then I ask friends and family if they know anyone.

If you don't have any friends or family then you can always use check a trade or alternative websites.

Any neighbours /people in your street had similar work done?
Always a starting point for me if a neighbour has had it done and was happy with the company
If not as suggested it's web sites where reviews/scoring system is used

Local Facebook groups can be useful (the "Voice of Xarea" kind of groups) if you keep an eye out for the extended family and friends all piling on to recommend the same person.

Neighbours - and if you see someone in the area who's had similar work done, knock on their door and ask. You'll quickly find out if it went well or not, in excruciating detail.

Our neighbours have had very bad jobs from check a trade approved people (leaking bathrooms, the lot) so don't trust their quality control.

Lol like the excruciating details bit
But you just have to endure it since you are basically asking a favour lol
But yeah I would rather hear from a neighbour than a Web site personally

Facebook groups are a nightmare ask for a recommendation and you will just get 100 people recommending their dad/brother/dog not people actually taking about who they used. I’d ask neighbours who have had work done and friends and colleagues for personal recommendations based on work they have had done.

You might want to check the planning requirements if your extension only had planning for a flat roof then converting it might be against the rules.

one thing I have realised is that decent tradesmen don’t seem to use websites/Facebook to get jobs as they are more than busy enough through word of mouth. If someone has loads of time to reply to Facebook threads and can’t start next Wednesday they are probably rubbish!
