Realtek HD motherboard audio. I bought these for skype etc. use and they work OK on a relatively new PC and laptop (headphone speakers / headset microphone) but the microphone doesn't work on my "old" Gigabyte EX58 UD5 motherboard. Microphone "volume" resets to zero even after increasing to 95 (seems normal value on other systems. Mic sensitivity snaps back to zero after it is increased to 100. Headphone speakers are fine.

The latest on-board sound driver is about 2012 !!!!. I suspect that this in the problem?

Any thoughts anyone. The Gigabyte site doesn't give a more up to date Realtek driver for that board.

Are you trying to plug your Headset with Microphone into the USB2.0 or 1.1 ports?
Have you updated the drivers for the USB ports? (All of them)
The onboard audio driver shouldn't impact on them if they're USB and not jack based (to plug direct into the onboard sound).

They are as up to date as they can be. Combination of USB2 and USB3 + PCI USB card. Same result with al sockets.

Hmmm, interesting. The only other thing I can think of is if you've got some software that is manually (automatically that is) controlling the microphone (on your behalf) and you're not aware it's doing it. Skype has such a setting, although it's not as aggressive. Do you have any other previous propietary software that was installed? Something like the Logitech Webcam software? That can do it too if it was given the go ahead to automatically adjust microphone settings.

I do have a Logitech webcam but it has manual volume / gain settings
