My friend is looking to get back into some PC gaming and needs a complete base unit build.

I’m assuming Ryzen is the way to go, but I’m not up to par with the knowledge.

Needed;

CPU/Cooler
Mobo
Ram
Gfx
PSU
SSD
Case

He will be gaming at 1080p/144hz.

Thanks in advance

I would wait for the B550's to launch if I were you, there's only a couple of weeks until they do.

You could consider dropping down to an RX580 for £159 (on OCUK), which would allow you to fit more storage in. Alternatively you could also spend an extra £30-40 on a 5600XT if you want more performance.

Personally I wouldn't. You'll be paying 50% more for a B550 mortar to get a couple of extra sataIII/usb connections and pcie 4.0, which is useless right now. And a 100$ B550 board is gonna be worse in every way, just with added pcie 4.0.

There's a range of boards coming out, the new MSI B550's wont necessarily be any better than those of any other company. The likes of the Mortar/Tomahawk spiked in price due to huge popularity (and Covid) with the current generation, waiting to see what boards are on offer for the sake of a couple of weeks is the sensible thing to do.

B550 boards will release on June 16th. Here is a list of all boards and prices https://wccftech.com/amd-b550-motherboards-prices-unveiled-msi-asus-asrock-gigabyte/ You can check the specs on the partner websites and compare them to the equivalent B450 models. The specs are 95% identical for 50% more money. Even the garbage tier boards are more expensive than a decent B450 board. For budget conscious builds it makes no sense to go with B550.

Personally speaking, the only things I care about in a motherboard are generational support and VRM's.

The comparative boards I've looked at have different VRM's, whether they're better or not is another question and one we wont know until the boards are in peoples hands.

Who is Momomo_US by the way? Serious question.
