I am going to build a computer with the B450M Mortar Max tomorrow.

Do you guys reckon I should update the BIOS as soon as possible once installed or leave as is if working okay?

I'm thinking of updates to the mobo with its compatibilty /updates with the ryzen platform.

Just worried because I don't like updating in case it borks the mobo.

I wouldn't bother unless you end up having some sort of issue that can be resolved with a bios flash.

Chances are the board will come with the most up to date bios anyway.

You cant really brick a motherboard that has a bios flashback option even if something goes wrong as you can just reflash without needing to go to the bios first.

I've updated mine 4 times so far on the tomahawk without issue although I skipped the last one as I have to re-do all my manual ram timings and memtest again but I will probably update again once the latest AMD AGESA ComboAm4PI 1.0.0.6 is out of beta as there is a few optimisations.

If you're running a Ryzen 3000 series CPU in it, then yes definitely update to the latest bios, just dont flash it in windows, manually download the bios from the MSI website for your board, reboot to the bios, load bios defaults, then save and exit, enter back into the bios again and select M-Flash to flash it, it will work perfectly fine, do not remove the USB stick until you are safely back in the bios once again, it seems to always do a couple of reboots on me when I flash mine, and sometimes wonder if its still updating in the background.

I bought this board a few weeks back with a R5 3600. Worked perfectly out the box. A BIOS update was released a few days ago, i updated it with a USB drive and the M-Flash BIOS tool, it took about 5 minutes and couldnt have been easier. No drama.

@VortexA1

I've been using a Mortar MAX since Sept 2019 with a 3600. That came with first release BIOS and worked first time. System has stable since the first time I used it.

I'm going to get the same board and CPU for a friend's new build as well.

Ok, thanks for all the replies. I'll install the new BIOS tomorrow with a USB Drive.

Really appreciate the help,
@ Marsman, yeah a cracking board :)

Been using my mortar max and a 3600 for 3 months with out even flashing the bios, I totally
Forgot until I read this thread. But with new cpu being released soon I may as well wait now as I want to upgrade my 3600

Never done this before, presumably I have to unzip the contents and put all of it on the stick using special software they creates an ISO image?

Don’t think that’s how it’s done.
But I haven’t done this either,
Format usb stick 2 fat32 download latest bios and put on usb device insert into back iOS next 2 flash button and reboot system enter bios and there you should see option to flash bios, press on that and it should read what’s on usb stick and away you go.
YouTube is your friend.
I want to update my bios but I have no tool to unzip extract such zip files. It’s only because I read this thread I’ve realised my bios is 7 months old

Use 7Zip,https://www.7-zip.org, it's free :) , use 7 Zip to extract the BIOS, easy to do just right click on new BIOS download and select extract, make sure you extract it to the USB drive you want to flash,FAT32 is fine for USB drive format, yes always use "load defaults" in BIOS after flash has finished and rebooted etc and gone well.

So recap download new BIOS onto USB stick, reboot into BIOS and go to MFLASH and follow guide below.

Btw plenty of BIOS update guides around, here is one for MSI ,https://www.wepc.com/how-to/update-msi-bios/

Bios updated from version 2.50 to Version 2.70 21/04/2020 it was a lot easier than I 1st thought

Great! Yes BIOS update is normally not an issue, main thing is to get the right BIOS, and flash from within BIOS and not Windows, main issue would be something like power lost ie power cut to brick things like BIOS while updating.
