Hi,

Will ~£300 now (RX 5700 or RTX 2060) be a good buy, or will waiting 3 months make more sense? It seems AMD/Nvidia continually raise prices, so am not sure if £300 even buy the RTX 3060, and would need to aim at a XX50 card. Essentially, I'm wondering if £300 now (with GPU price drops) getting better value than £300 later.

This would be for 1080p gaming.

Any help appreciated.

You wont get a 3060 in 3 months. Be lucky to get the released card (eg 3080) in 3 months stock is going to be low. Dont think you will see a 3060 for at least 6 months.
Question is can you wait or go for a proven card now like the RTX 2060S or 5700XT. That is one only you can answer.

Plus you dont want to be an early adopter. People have short memories regarding the disaster 2080/2080ti was when it came out with regards to failures. Personally I would buy one now and then in a years time see whats out there - might find what you have is enough. More of a risk to wait as its an unknown.

I'd wait and pick up something second hand/clearance cards potentially dropping in price. Unsure of the exact position of GPUs in the market for clearance stuff to be possible but it's something to bear in mind.

Ggo 2nd hand if your only gaming at 1080p unless you want ray tracing. A good 1070 at £200 would see you very well. My 1070 still maxes out games at 1080p on ultra (waiting for the 3070so i can upgrade)

What does the OP currently have?

If you have something at the moment to get you by I would wait.

If you are in an immediate NEED then buy now.
It's a fair point and I should have mentioned it before.

I've got an RX 570/i7 3770 currently, which just doesn't cut it for me even for 60fps for games like RDR2/Watch Dogs 2 etc.

The advice in thread is leaning me more towards buying something now, as the 3060 seems potentially ~6 months away.

Well, you will certainly benefit from getting a 2060 now - the choice is yours - you could then possibly consider a 3060 in a year or so when the prices may drop a little (unless crypto-mining or some other event pushes the prices through the roof again)

Indeed. So I'm going to start looking for RTX 2060/RX 5700 deals. I have read very mixed things about RX 5700 driver stability, so am a bit unsure of that card at present.

I always used to buy AMD graphics cards, then a few of years ago I bought a 1060 and I was very pleased with it.
My son needed a new graphics card last year, so I bought a 2060 and gave him my 1060 - I am pleased with both cards.
Should you get a 2060 now, you shouldn't regret it - unless the 3060's are significantly better and cheaper :D

actually for £300 I'd say you could buy now because the differences and margins are so reduced that you exposure to loss is greatly reduced, plus the low-end refresh will likely take time anyway so new cards launch but not in that price region to begin with.

It's the high end GPUs that carry the most risk and controversy honestly I don't understand how any retailer can sell a 2080Ti atm
