Can I cut this wire...

I’m no electrician. I need to shorten this telephone cable (obviously).

Can I just cut through it to do so? Some of the wires in the box aren’t even connected to anything. Anyone got any ideas?

Don’t want to cut it and give myself a new hair do.

Literally no idea. I guess that’s the ultimate question! I wasn’t sure if telephone wire didn’t carry any voltage as such.

I'd just pull it out of the box put some electrical tape on the end for good measure, push it through the hole and plaster over hole.

unscrew the cover, use a voltmere and ammeter on the terminals and see what it detects. I bet it's low enough you'd be fine to cut it without issue.

this isn't a bad suggestion. It's a pain lengthening cable at a later date if you can just push it into the wall or floor void.

It's standard BT 2 pair. there should be 3 bundles of 2, if there is chop it straight away!

Looks like phone cable to me and yes it can be cut. It looks like an Extension, not a Master socket also.

Just don't do what I did a long time ago and try to strip one of the wires with your teeth. Now I check and double check everything for a voltage!
