Virgin Media Discussion Thread

Can anyone in the thread speak to whether the 500mb speeds come with any kind of latency improvements?

Ive found gaming on my much slower BT connection to be better than I was experiencing on the 350m service I had with Virgin, especially once the line is saturated by others using Netflix etc.

Only those on the Gig1 service are using the latest DOCSIS 3.1 technology, M500 would be the same as M350 in terms of latency.

Some users have reported improvements from using a SH4, but good luck getting one :p

I've had a rolling credit applied to my account for £12 a month to bring my bill in line to the £54 that was agreed.
I predict I'll have to ring up more than once for this lol.

Ah thanks, thats helpful. Even using an asus router and QOS I can't seem to get the bufferbloat etc down to a reasonable level.

Its a shame, as my experience with Virgin for everything outside gaming has been good.

Any idea how to check or sort Gig1 not being available? When I check my postcode it says M350 is what I can get but I’m in Stockport which has had Gig1 for ages. SK2 is the postcode.

Ive phones several times and the call centre people just repeat what the checker states but can’t answer why it’s live in Stockport but not available in SK2.

thanks!

Agreed, I believe some of the older areas will require some upgrades of kit in order to implement DOCSIS 3.1, I'm hoping because I'm on a new Project Lightening segment that's not required.

I've been on the Gig1 pacakge since the weekend, prior to this it was BT FTTP 330. So far it's been fine, wireless signal is good, no downtime and I can get 100MB/s if the server at the other end is capable of it. Happy enough so far. I am using a Hub 4.

Nice, I'm hoping it's not too long before we can all get Gig1 for nothing other than getting away from the stupid "Ultimate Oomph" naming ;) (I literally cringe every time I have to say/type that name) Also I don't think I've turned on the V6 Tivo boxes since I got them, the unlimited SIM is handy though)

I was tempted to get the "Ultimate Oomph" bundle as it was £79.99 and the 500mbps would have been fine but ultimately the V6 box looked sucky and the lack of actual content I wanted to watch put me off.

Got tired of poor wifi so finally ordered a Nest Wifi router. Coming tomorrow, can’t wait to retire the Virgin Hub from its router duties.

I did the same.
I went from 100mb max in the same room as the router and 10mb on the third floor to 220mb in same room as router and 50-100 on the third floor. Very happy but may get a Nest Point to make the signal stronger.

Is it still only possible to get 500mb with a TV and phone deal?

I want broadband only.

I've been on virgin 500mb for a while and I've never really had an issue. The past week or so I'm seeing slow speeds, about 60-70mb on various speed tests when I usually always get 450+. Anyone know what I should be looking for to fix this?

Let me clarify, VM state some packages are “great for gamers” which by default means great pings because speed above a certain point is irrelevant.
Its an intentionally vague term. You could interpret it by saying that their game downloads are way quicker than say FTTC, which is “great for gamers”. I think 'real' gamers would know which ISPs and technologies have the lowest ping/routing.

Is Gig1 worth £51 a month? That's what they offered me, inc the 5gb SIM as part of the oomph deal that I should have recieved in Feb.

I used to get the full speed in the room, but the signal would deteriorate a lot in some areas of the house. Although my house isn't small, and only got the single router, the speed is much more consistent. I would also get much lower speeds once a week and would have to reboot. Hopefully I won't have to do that now. My garden was right behind the aft face of the Virgin Hub, and would get no signal just 3 meters away from the router (through a single exterior wall). Now I get the full speed there, and even 10 metres away still get 170Mbps. It seems to me the signal wasn't spreading equally in all directions.

It may be vague in a absolute sense to a lay person, but there's only one context to the people they're targeting with that slogan, and its definitely one of ping/latency performance. Their poor gaming performance is the exact reason I left. Unfortunately they can't compete with the Openreach network when it comes to ping. For me, the difference was very large.

Agreed, I had a BT FTTC connection before Virgin and ping was noticeably better, I do zero online gaming though and for me it was really all about upload and to a lesser extent download.
