Son wants car advice 9000 to spend on fun! He wants 10 year old car. HELP :)

@413x I never liked those barriers. They just seem unsafe and you've pretty much proved it. Glad you weren't injured and I assume from your location you got the job?
Hope he was prosecuted.

@Dis86
Yeah they are. Lucky the windscreen is so strong as its basically crash structure in soft tops. I do wonder if I would have been decapitated if the roof was down!
Police were there super quick say its a notorious bit of road. I did get it. Had to do interview in trainers as all my stuff was stuck in the boot!

@Nasher
Not sure he was on the phone, but if he wasn't, no idea how he managed to hit me.

Yea, seems to be normal for this kind of car. People buy it for something fun, then suddenly need something practical or have a kid :p

There isn't a lot which goes wrong with them and 60k miles is nothing for a Japanese car.

So i've owned and extensively modified a Mk2, had a lot of seat time in a Mk1 and Mk2.5 due to the clubs i was associated with, and taken extended test drives on multiple occasions of the Mk3 / Mk3.5 and Mk4.

The best driver focused MX5 is still the Mk1, as a prospect to live with the Mk3.5 would probably be my choice over the Mk4.

But everyone's opinion will be different, but that is mine without my opinion being tainted by money.
I own an NC2 and think it does very well as an all year round daily. I wouldn't consider an Elise etc as I just think that interior would get very boring very quickly not he days when you don't feel like having fun.

Err, so?

Are you one or those weirdos who gets caught up on number of owners instead of focusing on things that actually matter? :D

there will be a very good reason why they don't keep the car very long, either its a lemon or rubbish car overall. (i drove them few times and always thought 200bhp wasnt enough for the car)

wouldnt bothered me if the car is 15 - 20 year old . not 7....

Its had 4 owners not 30...

Sporty cars tend to go through lots of owners.

I was the 8th owner on my old Z4 3.0i, probably explains why it was falling apart xD

Friend of mine has an E39 which he is the 16th owner of i believe. Its been a good car and he's had it a few years now.

Meanwhile my Primera? 2 owner car.

The number of owners means nothing. Nada.

Yeah go on condition not number of owners.
Real sports stuff like the gt86, mx5 and other .... less practical cars do tend to be changed out as owners find they no longer fit there lifestyle.
Fst though is a solid choice as well because its a fiesta and thus practical, its reasonably fast (similar to both the other two cars i mention) and handles well.
Its FWD though and if your son is now a more experienced driver he may be better served with a RWD one as a sort of progression.

Edit... my first car i actually owned was a Primera eGT and this thing still to this day could out handle a lot of much more powerful and more expensive "sports" cars.. Christ it was good.

My fun car is 15 years old and I'm the 5th owner. 2 of the previous owners barely used it. One only had it for 2 years and put less than 200 miles on it.

It doesn't mean a lot.
