We live in London and have made do without a car since forever. I've never actually owned one but getting a massive itch for the freedom and ease of being able to jump in and get out/go somewhere. Especially in lockdown!

Anyhoo. We've hired a Fiesta ST a couple of times and that was a decent size for us, and good fun. I always liked Golfs or Polos but I know absolutely nothing about anything :p There's a few A1s and A3s on our street that look smart but I'm not sure the newer ones would be in our price range. Open to bigger cars too. One trip we might do on occasion is a drive up to Yorkshire to see her folks, although that is one journey that is quicker and easier on the train...

Usage would be very minimal. Occasional 60 miles down the M4 to see my Mum, occasional weekend sojourns, a country pub lunch or a countryside walk to escape the 'burbs. I sometimes go out to meetings at studios outside of London (about 15miles away, would be much easier in a car). That sort of thing. I'm sure we wouldn't even use it every weekend.

Any thoughts? What should we look at, what should we be looking out for and avoiding? :)

Parts will cost the same unless they are Audi specific cosmetic/body/interior items, and servicing will only cost more if you get it done at a main dealer.

Not all parts are universal. It's not quite a golf in a frock.

Any car club spaces near you?
Loads. But once you go over 1-2hrs they're very expensive. If I went to my Mum's say for lunch, that's 1hr each way, plus a few hours there and you're looking at £40-50 plus the miles excess.

Mini Cooper S or Mazda MX5.
Sorry, I think they're hairdresser's cars :o Plus realistically we would want something big enough to put a big suitcase in, on the odd occasion it's necessary or if I get dragged out to IKEA...

Anything servicey is though!

Both are excellent and very capable cars in their own way. Baffling that people write off the budget sportscar king so readily.

Its not exactly a Suzuki Vitara or a pink Honda Jazz. Those are hairdressers cars!

That's fair enough, if you need more practicality.

FWIW mostly men with grey hair/baseball caps I see driving MX5s, they are a very fun, driver focused car :)
