Garage won't provide me with service receipt?

The fact is that most “specialists” are poorly trained mechanics with a decent scan tool who get bigged up on forums by their mates / impress everyone with fancy pictures of their work, but don’t really know what they’re talking about

This is why I stopped using them. One asked me if my E39 had air conditioning - this was at a time when the E39 and E46 were the staple diet of specialists. If you don't know they never made one without it, how can you call yourself a specialist rather than just a garage with some good pictures on the wall?

Amazing. Even I know that and I’ve never owned either of those cars.

A “respected” Jag specialist I used previously blew up the rear fuse box, didn’t solve the issue I took it there for in the first place, and tried to charge me 8hrs labour despite the car being in worse condition than when I dropped it off. The guy working on my car was about 17 but was a genius according to the manager. Then another place I went to before I met the guy the OP is dealing with charged me more than the main dealer for a basic service.

Where's the risk in popping down and saying "Any chance of that service receipt please? I've sent you a couple of messages but you must not have seen them. I need it for the service history". Politely asking is unlikely to trigger his wrath whereas spamming messages might do.

You could go down the petty route and make him aware it's a legal requirement to at least provide an invoice if he's supplied a vat chargeable good / service to you... Although it sounds like it might not go down too well with this guy!

Or just go to trading standards and get them to deal with it.

But what is the guy going to do if you confront him about it? Attack you because he can't be arsed to write a receipt? Well then he'll be going to prison and that will be the end of his whole business lol

Put him on the spot in front of other customers.

After finding a bit more about the guy I’ve decided to not bother as he might actually be useful to me when something goes wrong with the car. I was a bit worried he might have fobbed me off and done nothing but it doesn’t seem that way. If/when I sell the car it’s a fun story and advice to the new owner.

I won’t be using him again for a service though that’s for sure.

We need to know the outcome of both of these stories! :p

You decided its not worth simply going there and politely asking for receipt, yet it bothered you enough to make a thread about it and discuss the matter for two days?

Nothing too exciting really - first one I paid him a flat diagnostic fee after a lot of arguing, second one I had to pay as it was the only place that could fit me in and I was taking the car to France in a few days.

I had some interesting dealings with VAG "specialists" when I had my Octavia. One was able to quote an exact (almost main dealer) price for a service but when I just wanted confirmation that included new spark plugs I got a rather irate "I DON'T KNOW, I HAVEN'T SEEN THE CAR YET. THIS IS THE FIRST TIME YOU'RE BRINGING IT TO ME, I DON'T KNOW THE CAR". Hmmm... yet you do know how much you want to charge.

I took my car to another VAG specialist with an electrical issue where the headlights kept dimming pretty heavily, most noticeable at a cold start. It had an error code for a secondary air pump fault, I told them this. "Nah, it won't be that mate" I pressed it further and was told they'd look into it but it won't be the cause. Got a call later that day saying the fault was with the alternator. Go to pick the car up and as soon as I start it the lights start playing up. After a full week and me asking every day if they've eliminated the secondary air pump they give up. I start the car, the lights start going crazy and in my frustration I told them to just give me a couple of minutes. I pull the plug on the secondary air pump and straight away the lights are fine. "Huh, never known that before". Er... yeah, that's great but you fitted an alternator I didn't need.

They said there was nothing they could do as my one had been exchanged for the new one. After day three of twice daily calls the full amount, including the work they did actually do, went back on my card. To be fair they dealt with it fairly in the end but it shouldn't have got that far.

Thankfully the MX5 is a simple machine and the garage in my village are happy working on it, not that it demands as much attention as the Octavia did!

Was this a certain garage out the back of Plympton? Near Chaplin's?

I took my E46 330ci there for Vanos issues.. £700 later and they couldn't fix it and still took my money

Normally you don't pay if they can't fix it. Otherwise what are you paying for? The might have done FA and just billed you.

drat this is where i went wrong in business i always worked on a no fix no fee basis, still had loads of work and slept at night :)

oh and always always gave a receipt for work carried out, and old parts that were not exchanged placed in customers boots in boxes. (even so called cash only jobs , had receipts i just reduced the figure and back vat it on my copy) . in those days you were quoted 115 pounds you got charged that my copy said 100 pounds +vat lol
