Hell Let Loose...Company Of Hero's, meets FPS

needs work reminded me of project reality, most of my time was running from spawn to a confusing front line not even sure i've found one yet ?
I like the way it looks feels etc though

There's been a big update/patch that dropped a few days ago that has changed some of the gameplay. So kind of a good time to get started with it to be honest.

Yeah the 'frontline' can be ever changing, and is part of the beauty of the game.

Stick with it, it's very rewarding.

Played this a few months ago but it only had one map at the time, may give it another go, particularly if there is a Discord group playing. The Carentan map looked great.

Ah right, for some reason I must have only played the St Marie du Mont map.

Looking forward to trying some different maps tonight. From memory it played quite a bit like Red Orchestra 2 / Rising Storm, games which I really enjoyed prior to games like PUBG coming out and I played them quite a lot. I'll give it another go tonight and see if the new maps and updates can hook me in.

Just played a few hours and really enjoyed it. Couple of main points:

Maps - great, very atmospheric and gloomy.

Graphics - look great but can be a bit blurry, which was what put me off a little when I tried it a while back.

Sound - really dodgy. Unless I'm just not used to it and I'm terrible, I'm finding the directional sound really bad and hard to place where gun shots are coming from. Sometimes the tank engines sound a bit like lawnmowers too.

Movement - clunky, but not too bad, as said in earlier posts, can be frustrating trying to fit through a gap in a wall.

A refreshing change though, had a good time.

The sound was changed in the patch and the general consensus of opinion so far is that people dont like the sound changes, so I wouldnt be surprised if they are reverted/tweaked back to prepatch sfx

It's a mixture. I think the quality of all the weapon sounds is better, but there's room for improvement in their style. Bit too much bass on lots of them, I prefer sharper sounding gunshots. MG42 sounds amazing now though. I hope they don't revert, but I wouldn't mind some further refinement.

But the sound engine has improved... no more stuttering automatics, and having sounds affected by environment is great. Hopefully they retain that.

Anyway, I sat and played this for about 6 hours solid yesterday. Never played it for more than a round or two before getting bored prior to update 7, just due to the clunkines, but it feels so much better now. The hotfix seems to have done the trick too...performance is improved, and I only suffered one crash, and that was just as I was about to decide on leaving to get some dinner anyway :p

I think your expectations are way off. No one has ever said this was intended to be a milsim like Arma3. I get that it's at the lighter end of the realism scale, but its a long way off the speed running, snap shooting, 360 no scope, bunny hopping kill streak fest that is CoD.

I would suggest trying Post Scriptum if you want something a bit more hardcore, but even that is not a milsim.

Thats why I like Hell Let Loose, I remember seeing videos of Arma 3 8 years ago and thought wow that looks great, I immediately bought it on release, played it for about 2 hours, uninstalled and have never played it again. I realised then that the milsim genre simply wasnt for me, I quite simply just didnt find it fun. For me, shooters need to be in a nice mid-place between arcade and realism. Too much arcade like CoD and I dont enjoy it because its all rush here, rush there, shoot, die immediately respawn, shoot, nade, nade, nade, nade, nade, nade, nade, rocket launcher at some infantry guy, rocket launcher at some infantry guy, rocket launcher at some infantry guy, rocket launcher at some infantry guy, hide behind wall while health ticks up, rush, rush, rush.....well, you get the idea. But Arma taught me that I didnt enjoy the opposite end of the spectrum when too much realism results in 10mins of actual fun per 60mins of game (which seemed like a waste of time to me, especially when I have so many other games I can fill that 50min differential with). Funnily enough it wasnt only the games but also the communities that I didnt gel with, the CoD sort of community are...well...often toxic , and I too often found the milsim community to be a little OTT, like they were all wannabe real life soldiers or something doing the modern equivalent of playing war in the woods with sticks and taking it all way too seriously.

I find that Hell Let Loose sits nicely in between arcade and milsim and is just right for me. Its got a little bit more realism than a CoD game (enough to filter out the worst parts of the CoD playerbase) and a little more arcade than a full blown milsim (enough for me to find it more on the entertainment than realism scale and enough to filter out strange fellows who get irate if I dont use military terminology while speaking etc :) )

Seems now I have to change the "dead body despawn delay" to 0.5 min from 4 min or the game becomes unplayable. Never had to touch that before! I kind of liked seeing bodies strewn all over the place, adds to the immersion for me. If anyone is having huge fps drops then check that setting. (can't remember if 0.5 is default you know)

I bought this a year ago and refunded it, bought it again on the last day of the steam sale and the difference is massive.
It really has improved so much, i cant stop playing it now.
Incredible atmosphere, i love the teamplay aspect and the community as a whole seems quite decent and mature.
I always loved realism and tactical shooters so i felt right at home with the gunplay but the whole resource and class system adds a whole new layer of depth.
By far the most authentic and immersive W2 game ive played since back in the days of COD 1 and CODUO and day of defeat.
