Garden “Man Cave” Ethernet cabling...

Hi all,

I need to get an Ethernet cable (or rather cables as I think running 2 would be a good ideal!) from my house down the garden to my cabin.

It’s only a run of about 20 metres max so not overly long.

I will need to stick them both in conduit in the ground/under my patio.

Can anyone let me know what type of cable us best, I’ve seen people use cat5/cat5e/cat6 etc and I’m not sure what’s best.

5e or 6 is fine.

Would suggest external grade for any bit that's not in conduit.

Cat6 is overrated.

I would go for Dog3

Nice one thanks for the link. I was planning on using copex as it’ll be easier to use.

If it's in conduit then there's no benefit in using external grade cable

As I understand it the only difference in that the outer sheath isn’t degraded by UV light. If you want the stuff with the bittrex gel, that’s different, and rather nasty to work with.

Precisely, I've had 2 20m runs of Cat5e in conduit to the garage for over 10 years now under paving slabs and it still gives decent throughput. One cable is for a PoE UniFi AP Pro and the other goes to a UniFi 8 port PoE switch in constant use for 5 CCTV cameras, a backup server and a phone.

Kennable do nice external cat6 cables that are surprisingly cheap. Up to you whether you buy a roll or ready made cables. The rolls are silly cheap but really good cables.
