Hi all,

I'm looking to do a new build in the next few weeks and was wondering if someone could be so kind to rate this build or offer suggestions on what I can get instead please? With the GPU I'm going to wait for the 3xxx series to come out as I may opt for one of those in Sept/Oct or the 2070 Super.

Intention is to use it for Adobe InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, After Effects and Premier. Plus a bit of gaming as well and would be nice to future proof it for about 9-10 years.

My basket at Overclockers UK:
Total: £1,138.05 (includes shipping: £13.20)

Yeah the B450 Tomahawk is still a great board, but B550 brings a few features over it and guarantees Zen 3 CPU support. MSI have promised Zen 3 support on their B450 Max boards, but that might change, as things seem uncertain whether they can keep that promise or not.

Tbh for the money you're spending, £20 more and you can get one of the best X570 VRM boards - Gigabyte X570 Aorus Elite. That said the MSI B550 Tomahawk is one of the best VRM B550 boards too. But X570 uses a Gen4 chipset link, basically has more PCIe lanes for more simultaneous NVMe and SATA drives and X570 has more USB capacity.

Edit: Btw that cooler is a behemoth just a heads up! Some have had clearance issues on the 1st RAM slot on certain boards, it can be a squeeze... The Dark Rock 4 (same model but not the Pro) is almost identical performance wise, if you wanted to be safer on the clearance.

Edit2: Yeah also makes sense to wait for Nvidia Ampere GPUs if you have something else to re-use in the meantime. :)

Not a bad idea either, that combined with the PSU saving I suggested - you got yourself a 3900X upgrade :p

This £35 cheaper cooler would be already really nice for 3900X.

Unlike Intel AMD has quite honest TDPs.

Thanks, much appreciated, I'll have a look at that! I was thinking of the B450 Tomahawk for the motherboard, but have heard the B550 is miles better and the price different isn't too huge.
For that upward 10 year usage I would require PCIe v4 at least for graphics card slot.
While good amount of better boards were tested by makers to be PCIe v4 capable for main x16 slot, AMD blocked B450/X470 boards from using PCIe v4.

Thanks so much! I think I'll go for the X570 Aorus Elite then for the extra £20 if it's better than the B550 Tomahawk?

It does look massive, but it looks to be one of the best coolers available for the 3900X, I think you can move the fan up a bit more to allow for better clearance if need be.

Yeah, I have an Nvidia 660 which I can use for the moment and save up a bit more and decide on the 3XXX series once released or go for the 2070 Super.

Nice one, thanks so much for the tips! (You and Sparx) With the money saved I've gone for the 3900X instead of the 3700X.

That’s annoying lol, both the PSU and RAM we mentioned were in stock when we posted as I checked :p

I’d remove your link as it’s a competitor which OCUK don’t like lol :o I’d go for the Corsair RM650x then for £96.99 not in stock with OCUK but if you search should find it easy. Fully modular and 10 year warranty. The one you linked is on back order too lol

I’d of suggested the 550w Phanteks but a 3900X and 2070S+ or better at full load would nearly peak its capacity. So I’d suggest a good 600-700w at least for headroom.

Mobo wise, the X570 Aorus Elite has more PCIe lanes, more USB ports and SATA support etc. For the money spending it’s a nicer future proof board.

Haha, I suppose they must have had only a few left which some people must’ve quickly snapped up.

Cool, thanks for that recommendation. I’ll have a look around, it looks like there’s a global shortage of PSU’s at the moment due to the current pandemic.

Thanks! I've managed to find a RM750X for an extra £3.01p so I think I'll go for that instead for the extra capacity :) Edit, looks like it's not available for delivery/collection!

I presumed OP had an existing system he was taking the GPU out of lol (maybe wrong?)

@Nero_911 gz on the last PSU haha. Should be a nice system that overall. Have to take some build pics and share when it’s built :)

This is a good move but that Ryzen does not have IGP so you are going to need a GPU.

Oh absolutely, I have an Nvidia 660 TI which I'll use for the moment until the 3XXX series is released and then decide whether to buy one of those or the 2070 or 2080 Super depending on what the costs will be.

Thanks! Unfortunately the RAM which Joxeon recommended is still out of stock and on pre order, I spoke to OCUK today and they've said to me it should be arriving any day into them now! So I'm going to wait for a week and if it's still delayed then I'm going to pay a bit extra and buy something else instead. Yes, will do! :)
