What would motors do?

I used to work in connection with the insurance industry, so I am fairly certain the below is accurate unless something has changed in the last 3 or 4 months.

Cars covered by a motor-trade policy still show as insured on the MID, you have to keep your insurer updated with changes to your own personal "fleet" of vehicles, so they can be added and removed from your policy. The only time you don't have to inform them is if the vehicle has an existing and valid insurance policy (for example a customers car if you work at a garage) and you have the vehicle in your posession for less than 14 days.

If they show as uninsured on the MID, then they are uninsured. Just as uninsured as your own car would be if you cancelled the insurance and continued driving it around. Whether or not one of the associated parties has a motor traders policy is irrelevant, because they haven't been using it properly.

They would flag up as uninsured on any static or mobile ANPR cameras.

Call 101 or use the Police live-chat if it is available in your area, to report each uninsured vehicle. DON'T call 999 or 112, it isn't an emergency.

Don't engage with your neigbour directly, you don't need to.

The lack of insurance is the only thing in your post which concerns me though!

Sounds like your wanting to create a problem when there isn't one

There is one. Several uninsured cars driving around. Which the OP is now aware of.

If it weren't for that part, I would agree entirely with everyone saying nose out.

He has seen them move, fair enough if he knows for a fact the bloke is using em all as daily drivers which I suspect he doesn't.

What relevance does whether or not they are being used as "daily drivers" have?

An uninsured driver hits you, they spring out and say "Im uninsured but don't worry, this isnt my daily driver!" you think "oh thank heavens for that!" :p

No but what I mean is if there literally moving what is a few parking spaces unless there drunk or stupid chances are you ain't gonna hit any one

Plus I get the impression this guy is cleaning them not selling them or using the cars as you would do normally.

That being said if the OP is that bothered maybe speak to the guy first or least attempt to even if he is English isn't great.

Jumping straight on reporting him seems a dick move especially when he is the new neighbour

I don't understand your mindset here at all, lets just agree to disagree, and you can continue to feel OK with people driving around uninsured under certain Mark1989 approved conditions. :p

For what it's worth I don't condone uninsured drivers I was just going on what little info there is and what little the op actually knows of the situation.

Poor chap may believe he is insured for one, speak to him is all I'd do if I was genuinely concerned

I'm also tired so meh haha

I disagree. Regardless of your level of English, the law states that a car must have a valid insurance policy if it is at any point on the public highway. If the guy was storing them all on his private driveway, then not much you could do.

But i don't see why this guy and his mate get to flout the law just because they're only moving a few cars around.

Frankly if they can't even be bothered getting a valid trade insurance policy together, i'd dread to think what other shady corners they're cutting when it comes to selling the cars. I suspect a lot of undeclared income etc if someone was to look closely.

Again what if this person works for some one else and is under the belief he is insured?

Not every person in the world is out to break the law. The OP could simply point the error out see what reply/action is taken if nothing then should report.

Whoever is the registered keeper of the vehicles is the one who will get in doodoo, not this bloke. Unless they are his cars.

The neigbour will only get in doodoo if he gets a tug while driving one of them.

If you read @Acme's post you'll realise he said to report the vehicles, not the neighbour so if he knows the vehicles aren't insured or not is entirely irrelevant. OP also stated that the vehicles can be scattered around the local area, not just on the road outside his/the neighbours house so anyone in the area could report uninsured vehicles anyway.

I'm not sure why you're arguing about this to be honest, the law is clear and if reported in a sensible way (as per Acme's advice) then it's not going to bite OP in the bum and ensures that no uninsured vehicles are on the roads.

I'm with @Acme. If they're uninsured and being driven then it needs reporting. As a car owners we pay through the nose for our car insurance, in part to cover the costs of uninsured drivers. This business has decided that they do not need to comply with the law and costing everyone, indirectly.

Agree, report the cars. Good neighbour or not I really can't understand why one would turn a blind eye to the law being flouted.

I've a neighbour a few doors away, good bloke all round but he's been known to sell a few ounces of Moroccan black, good neighbour or not he got his arse busted and dragged out of his home :D

Not arquing at all so no idea why you think that tbh.

Was just saying what I thought since it's a forum and it's an open discussion.

Any one can report your right, I was only think op just moved in maybe nice to speak to the bloke first.

If this has been happening for months and suddenly an issues happens the neighbour may go to the OP and potential give himself agro. The bloke may suspect the op as he is the new neighbour.

Anyway I'll leave it here, I've said my thoughts no one has to agree or disagree

I think having a chat with the neighbour could make things worse. If the guy is knowingly moving around a number of cars without insurance and the OP comes along, it's going to be a case of "oi mind your own ******* business". Then even worse when the police call by.

An anonymous tip off can't make the neighbour suspicious of it being the OP, it could easily have been a passer-by, or just a chance by the police. As long as OP doesn't give any obvious clues away like standing at the end of his driveway making a note of all the car registrations that his neighbour is working on.

this and shudder agree with @Acme. :) plus in the first post the op did say

After chatting with another neighbour it transpires that he's continously got about 4-5 cars on the go, he leaves them dotted about in other cul de sacs and moves them outside his house, presumably when he needs to prep them for sale.

so if this is the case there are potentially more around the area.

not saying this is the case but i went to look at a car for the daughter just before lockdown after a cheap runaround , was advertised on facebook or the likes cant just remember which . got to the address ..no car guys comes out we ask about the car he tells says his friend will fetch it from the yard and jumps into a new focus and drives off. 15 mins later he arives back with the car we look around it but not happy due to quite a bit of damage and the fact it looked like a shed so made excuses and left.

driving out of the housing estate we pass a row of parked cars and the focus is parked at the end. ... so there are a lot of part time traders working like this .
