honestjohn.co.uk was a useful web-site for checking car models, specs;
with site update over past week, seems you have to accept, unacceptable levels of tracking, to use the site.

You have to accept securepubads.g.doubleclick.net , as one example, to get site to work, plus a heap of other junk.

Any good UK alternatives ?

I would have thought these days you'd be challenged to find a site that wasn't running analytics and advertising cookies etc. from someone like Google or Amazon

Combination of using Firefox with their ETP and uBlockO seems to catch pretty much all the tracking gumpf. All good to me.

I have the securepubads.g.doubleclick.net blocked and it seems to work fine.

Do go on...
the war of nuclear escalation - I resent spending cpu cycles and network bandwidth on poorly constructed web-sites, I suppose they can't afford decent programmers as they get no advertising revenue

thanks - for me the ability to switch tabs on pages like
https://www.honestjohn.co.uk/carbycar/volvo/s60-2018/good

fails if securepubads.g.doubleclick.net
is not enabled https://developers.google.com/doubleclick-gpt/guides/get-started, since a function googletag.pubads is undefined.

Nonetheless I never realised doubleclick was insidiously related(owned ?) by google, I though it was an independant actor - they've got people everywhere.

Ah yes, you're right. I can't select any of the tabs, but using my "DeRrrr TrAcKiNg" Chrome browser with everything enabled, it all works fine.

I would generally just avoid the website now, just out of principle.

This isn't really relevant to the motors section of the forum is it?

It should be moved to the threads no one gives a **** about section:)

I never realised doubleclick was insidiously related(owned ?) by google,

Why is ownership of another company an 'insidious relationship'?

You wouldn't describe OcUK as being insidiously related to CaseKing would you?

It's not like they've tried to keep it a secret or anything.

If you're concerned about this, I suggest a properly configured firewall or even PiHole DNS filtering would be eye-opening, especially with mobile phones

I'd hypothesise many folks on motors use it for motors info. ? wonder if (car) dealers can access your search predilections.

Related to that - if you used google maps for navigation, do google know everywhere you go ... maybe that is self evident.

Don't look up Google Location History whatever you do, you'll have a seizure

There are lists of all the dodgy tracking sites online which you can add to your windows hosts file. That will fool the site in to thinking it's working but it's sending all the data to a local address (so, nowhere). Which is useful if cookie blocking breaks the site :)

yes - the problem is 3rd party doubleclick is listed in most dodgy sites black lists, but the honestjohn web site won't work without it,

its becoming a chronic problem ... and I need to get wiser, an intellectual challenge.

- I wouldn't want google to know I sometimes look at the Skoda brand.
