After a bit of advice,

I've put together a new Ryzen 3600 build over lockdown as an upgrade from my aging fx8320 the only thing I haven't yet done is the graphics card, I'm still running a 7950 which is obviously holding me back now.

I only play at 1080p and found I can get a 1660super brand new so still with warranty for basically £165 because I have some money on a gift card I can use.

However part of me feels like I could really loose out next month when the cards launch if it makes cards such as the 1660 suddenly drop in value or even make the 2000 series a good second hand deal, on the other hand I'm fed up of always waiting to see what's launching just round the corner!

What should I do, just get on with it and buy the 1660super or wait...?

That's a good price for a 1660 super.

3080 release next month but it may take longer for the 3070 etc to be released and even longer for custom gpus from the big makers like Asus.

I'm having a similar purchasing dilemma at the moment. I want to upgrade an age-old Radeon 5850 and I'm pretty sure I'll move to nVidia as the card may end up being used for Zwift which is OpenGL based (everything I've found says nVidia is the far better choice of OGL performance). I thought I'd got a 1660 Super from eBay last week for £185 but it turned out to be a plain 1660, so it's going back to the post office tomorrow.

Looking at Hotdeals, 1660 Supers are a few quid over £200 now and may well drop further if vendors want to clear some stock prior to the new models coming. Is the 2060 going to replace the 1660 at a similar price point? Who knows...

£165 is a great price for a 1660S - and for 1080p can't go wrong.

I doubt Nvidia's GPU launch next month will have any impact on the price range and cards you're looking at for a while still.

The next gen GPU released next month if Nvidia stick to the historic launch schedule, will be the 3080/Ti equivalent (top end) then they gradually release the lower models in the months after. The 1080p equivalents (3060 or similar) will likely not be released until 2021.

That's a good price for a 1660 super, there's no indication yet on a release date for the next series of nivida GPUs, and the lower end products could be delayed or price hiked. If you feel you need the performance now then get it, if your happy to continue with a 7950 then wait, but you could be waiting for a while

Assuming you're games are still playable then wait.

Although if you're games are litterally stuttering then definately get the 1660 super now.

Only you can decide if you're happy to tolerate your current GPU for a little longer.

Thanks all, I think I just need to bite the bullet, I am holding back on certain games, fallout 76 for example and also I want to play the new flight sim which simply isn't going to happen on the 7950.

If it's a lot of money for you might be a good idea to wait, if its throw away and you aren't chasing the performance crown it's a good buy

Even if the cards launch in September there will be little to no stock. I cant see the price of existing cards drop till the new ones are in plentiful supply and this might even be Q1 2021 or more !

I recently got a 1660super for an ITX build I did, running at 1440p it's a really impressive card. I didn't think it would deliver fantastic frame rates at that but it does a super job. Handles VR well enough too.

Do you mean £165 + whats on the gift card?
If so, how much in total is it costing?

I'd defo look at getting the 1660. Looking at the road map for cards in that price range, you are looking at November earliest (NV start top down and drip feed to encourage you to overspend) :)

Well got the card today and I'm happy, over twice the fps in heaven benchmark and the Assetto Corsa benchmark.

Also managed to put a 160mhz clock on the GPU core, and a scarcely believable 1000mhz on the memory and it seems completely stable! Will have to keep playing and see.

If you want to buy one right now then I would go for it. Even when the new cards come out they will initially be in short supply, maybe have issues, maybe the price will be inflated - it takes a few months for things to settle. So if you don't mind waiting until next year then sure, wait, otherwise buy that 1660!

Wait. Oops, thinking about it (I know you bought already anyway) the new stuff will be for higher tiers so this will be unaffected for a while and you can always sell on later down the line and get something better.
