I've never had an email like this.

I think it's legit. But looks very dodgy.
If it's legit I've never heard of being fined for not voting

Even weirder it's sent from personal business email address . Not a do not reply mailbox

I definitely didn't have one of these last year

Fined for not registering to vote!? Next they'll be sending us to the gulags.

Unless you have a valid reason not to you can be fined, it's been that way for quite some time (2012)

OP you don't need to vote but you must be registered to vote.

Its genuine i believe. However in mine doesnt give a link just a unique username and password to login but no link where too!
Also it comes from [email protected] and thats the same as on their website so I cant see how not genuine.
Also yes been in force for years that you can be fined for not being on the register, as other have said its used for more than just who is registered to vote.

I think that the Electoral Register is used for a whole lot more than just determining who is eligible to vote?

I believe that it is used extensively by Banks, Finance Companies, Credit Rating Agencies, etc., etc., etc.

Yeah if you aren't on it at the correct address you'll fail a credit check, how does that morally justify criminal sanctions for failing to register on it?

I got the yearly letter from the council but this year they don't require me to do anything if I'm not making any changes. In past years you used to have to still confirm everything was correct either by post, online, or sms.

I always double check because a couple of years ago they switched everyone who had opted out of the edited register to opted in on the form. A lot of people probably wouldn't have noticed this and just confirmed everything was correct regardless. Obviously the council make more money the more names they are able to sell to junk mail companies so I still think they did it on purpose. The edited register is the one that is open to spammers and companies like 192.com

It's strange because I recently changed address and got a letter but I was never threatened with a fine, that's a classic tactic used by scammers and would set alarm bells ringing for me.

The big reason isn't in that list.

It helps/does determine the pool for jury duty,
