Digging a drive way - found this in my lawn, what is it?

so I'm digging the front lawn down to 200mm and found this in the middle, any ideas what is is or what its for?

Am I okay to remove the big stone slab at the top and cover the hole to lay limestone foundation?

There is a hole but it looks sealed off at the bottom?

There was a lawn over it but lawn is now removed!

May cause flooding if its drainage. Make sure rainwater can still get to it.

So if I put a cast iron grid over the top of the hole and then cover with 40mm limestone water should still be a to get through right?

Hm interesting do you think we need to keep access to it? That would be a pita to build into the surface if the drive. My plumber mate is round on Thursday he's going to check it out.

I couldn't really tell to be honest! I mean its not oak island or anything but I couldn't see anything specific by the light of my phone torch.

It does! But as I say it was buried under a large stone flag, under 2 inch of top soil and a lawn.

We only found it when we stripped the lawn back to sub
