I see quite a few motherboard reviews online these days where the reviewer criticises the lack of USB ports on boards that have 4 to 6!

I find this quite bizarre as I use a maximum of 4 USB devices and even if there were only 4 ports on my board and I got another USB device I could just use a hub.

So, how many USB ports do you want?

As many as possible. I have 4 USB devices plugged in right now, and at times use twice as many as that. I could use a hub, but that would be cables, and they are less reliable than plugging directly into the MB (e.g. I had to try a lot of USB 3 hubs to find one that could power 2+ HDDs).

I also want to see MBs with multiple USB-C ports on them, especially given that USB-C hubs don't even exist.

I use 8 + 2 on the case from my motherboard, but I do have 3 extra controllers, a USB WiFi adapter, and USB3 multi card reader plugged in all the time. I could manage with less.

Even though I have USB-C gadgets (phone etc), I don't see a need for it on my PC. USB-A to C works fine.

4-6 on a board is fine, as usually have another couple provided by a motherboard header connected to the case.

Give me as many as you can at the back. What puzzles me more is some quite expensive cases (usually ITX) minimising or even eschewing front USB ports in an effort to appear all inscrutable and monolithic. That approach I just can't get on board with. I want to be able to plug a game controller or two into the front. Receiver doodads for wireless peripherals often work better in the front nearer the peripheral in question.

My case already has 2x front USB 3.0 and I'm considering modding it for 2 more ports, as the 2 USB 2.0 ports which are currently an unused header on the motherboard could be pressed into service - USB 2.0 is perfectly acceptable for input devices.

As above, you only need keyboard/mouse connected to the back, maybe a headset too. Removable drives shouldn't really be connected to the back as for most people that would require some faff to get to the back of their PC's. So you'd have a few more USB ports on the front.

Mouse
2 for keyboard
XBox controller Dongle
Watch charger
Phone charger
Steering wheel
VR headset
External soundcard
Soon to be purchased USB mike

That's just the things that never get unplugged, need spares at the front for cameras, external drives and the like.

So as many as possible please.

I can easily live with 4 on back and 2 via front panel header.

Rear:
Mouse
Keyboard
Mic
DAC

Front:
Data transfer now and then.
Controller dongle, rarely.

How much of that can be offloaded to other ports? My keyboard has a couple ports, monitors often do too.

Both my screens have USB hubs built in so most things just plug into those, probably have 8 or so devices plugged in to USB tho

I have 8 items plugged in at the moment and that doesn't include the 3 USBs i need for my Rift VR or the USB for my Printer which is disconnected at the moment

Can't remember what there all connected too :o but here some
Xbox one game pad dongle
Force feedback joystick
Mouse
Keyboard
Phone
EXT USB 3.0 Drive
