Will CPUs drop in price in response to the new consoles?

You have to remember a console life cycle is roughly 5 years so if you were to change to console gaming you might regret it in a few years time when better CPU's and GPU's come out at a cheaper price tag, that's what is good about pc gaming you can choose a upgrade path that suits you.

I think graphics card prices will start to drop after the console release. Some probably pretty drastically as the market seems pretty saturated.
 
It's all about timing, I can't see there being any good black Fridays deals as so close to release but maybe January or February might be a good time if you want to upgrade to the next generation as long as there isn't a shortage off supply.

I hope for the older generation but for the rdna2 and next gen nvidia cards I can only see higher starting points then we’re used to.

Im not sure on the next round of graphics, but my hunch is we will see much better value to performance ratio, at least shortly after the release of the console.

Prices have already dropped and the consoles exist due to that competition, prices aren't going to drop over night because of consoles, you'd have to be completely unaware of the computer sales landscape to think selling 100 million consoles over 7 years would make them want to lose profit on literally billions of CPU's over the same period. :)

My 4c/4t 2500k was the princely sum of £120 iirc. If prices have come down it's because they got outrageously expensive (over time) first :p

The 2500K cost about £250~ plus £20~ for a HSF. Today you could buy something twice as fast with a decent HSF for £100.

Lets not discount the fact that at the time it was $1.60+ to £1, and it's $1.30 today, prices went up as the $:£ became less favourable to buyers using GBP, the 4690K for example in (may as well be the same as a 2500K) was still £170 when reviewed on 20th June 2014, but fast forward to Jan 2017 with 7600K and it was reviewed at a £200 cost, but the $ cost was still only $242, the same as the 6700K, the 4690K, 4670K, and the 3570K before it.
 
I remember paying about £230 for 2600K at launch. I think by the time 2700K came out they'd gone up over £250 because Bulldozer was such a disappointment.
 
I think bulldozer was a bit later on. I seem to remember looking at the 1090T and oddball AM2-3 boards.

I kind of regret not buying 1090T.

No - they don't need to 'respond' because there is a big market for CPUs that won't be swayed significantly by a console. I would say GPUs are more under threat than CPUs; since the mining boom collapsed the vast majority of people buying graphics cards will be gamers and then potential customers of a console.
 
I think Microsoft are insane with their Xbox strategy. They should support keyboard and mouse, sell Office 365 subscriptions and allow a userspace like Windows sandboxed from the console OS. They'd sell a bazillion consoles to parents of school kids
 
The issue with the new consoles is for a few years the games will be built to also work on xbox 1 and ps4

Next gen consoles will be held back by ps4 and xbox for a couple of years

Possibly why Nvidia seem to be releasing before the consoles.
